Nitrogen transformation and retention in riparian buffer zones
Diffuse pollution of nutrients and pesticides from agricultural areas is increasingly recognised as a major problem in water management. Ecotechnological measures as constructed wetlands and riparian buffer zones clearly have an important role in the reduction of diffuse pollution by removing and modifying pollutants from agricultural runoff.

Abstract Baseflow constitutes over half of streamflow in mountainous headwaters of the western United States (US), making accurate quantification critical for water resource management. However, traditional baseflow separation methods are often arbitrary and ambiguous, complicating validation.

Rappahannock County Riparian Buffer Study
Riparian buffers (land bordering streams) are important zones for maintaining water quality and providing critical habitat. Rappahannock County has a rural landscape that presents the opportunity to record baseline conditions of riparian buffers.

Abstract Groundwater–surface water exchange is a key hydrological process that governs river water quality and aquatic ecosystems. However, the quantification of such exchange remains uncertain, especially within river island aquifers where exchange processes are highly heterogeneous.

Abstract Drought is one of the most severe and complex natural hazards causing changes in water balance and impeding crucial water‐dependent ecosystem services. Over the last 25 years, multiple severe droughts linked to El Niño events have affected the Zambian and Zimbabwean regions.

Policy implications. Our results can help prioritize surveillance strategies and the implementation of preventive measures, particularly in areas where landscape structures cannot provide disease regulation services. Landscape management actions aimed at increasing the amount of forest areas in a more aggregated manner could help restore those ...

Modelling Waikato Farm Nitrogen Discharges for Policy Analysis [PDF]
This study describes the development of bio economic models examining the economic and water quality impact of various proposed policy options in the Upper Waikato catchment. In the first phase nitrogen emissions are determined for representative farming

Species specific earthworm mediated nutrient dynamics in riparian buffer zones
To halt further water quality deterioration, riparian buffer zones have been constructed to reduce diffuse nutrient inputs from agriculture. The efficiency of buffer zone nutrient removal is, however, highly variable. Here, we argue that this may be due to the poorly understood contribution of earthworms to buffer zone nutrient dynamics.

A network analysis of failure pathways for fish and fish habitat offsets
Biodiversity offsets are widely used to compensate for environmental impacts, yet failures often arise from interacting factors rather than isolated issues. By analyzing co‐occurrence patterns across 48 fish and fish habitat case studies, we identify five recurring failure syndromes: foundational, implementation uncertainty, biological, hydrological ...

Landscape Mapping Reveals Depth‐Dependent Regional Heterogeneity in Soil Microbial Diversity
ABSTRACT Aim To identify microbial hotspots and investigate the spatial distribution and assembly mechanisms of soil bacterial and archaeal communities across a coastal ecosystem, and to assess implications for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management. Location Yellow River Delta, China (YRD, ~13,680 km2 coastal plain). Methods A total
