Riparian vegetation dynamics and evapotranspiration in the riparian corridor in the delta of the Colorado River, Mexico

Journal of Environmental Management, 2008
Like other great desert rivers, the Colorado River in the United States and Mexico is highly regulated to provide water for human use. No water is officially allotted to support the natural ecosystems in the delta of the river in Mexico. However, precipitation is inherently variable in this watershed, and from 1981-2004, 15% of the mean annual flow of ...

Theory, methods and tools for determining environmental flows for riparian vegetation: riparian vegetation‐flow response guilds

Freshwater Biology, 2009
Summary1. Riparian vegetation composition, structure and abundance are governed to a large degree by river flow regime and flow‐mediated fluvial processes. Streamflow regime exerts selective pressures on riparian vegetation, resulting in adaptations (trait syndromes) to specific flow attributes.

Riparian vegetation and fluvial geomorphic processes

Geomorphology, 1996
Abstract Riparian vegetation and fluvial-geomorphic processes and landforms are intimately connected parts of the bottomland landscape. Relations among vegetation, processes, and landforms are described here for representative streams of four areas of the United States: high-gradient streams of the humid east, coastal-plain streams, Great Plains ...

HYDROLOGICAL AND GEOMORPHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF RIPARIAN VEGETATION IN DRYLANDS

2006
Drylands are regions encompassing hyperarid, arid, semiarid, or subhumid climatic conditions (see also Chap. 1). They include cold and warm subtropical deserts, savannas, and the Mediterranean environments. Our focus here is on warm drylands, which are generally characterized by the existence of a well-defined dry season dominated by subtropical high ...

The Riparian and Aquatic Vegetation of the River Wye

Journal of Biogeography, 1981
The distribution of the riparian (bank) and aquatic vegetation of the River Wye is described in relation to soil and water chemistry, climatic factors and, where appropriate, height above river level. 2. All the measured water quality factors (i.e. conductivity, turbidity, pH, K', CaP, Mgr, CO3-- HCOL- N, P and ash) increased downstream, with concomi ...

Strategies for Cutting Management of Riparian Vegetation

World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2008, 2008
This study presents the numerical predictions on the detailed hydrodynamic and habitat quality characteristics of riparian vegetation by using a depth-averaged two-dimensional flow model. The model solves the depth-averaged Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation.

The Effects of Riparian Vegetation on Bank Stability

Environmental and Engineering Geoscience, 2002
In northern Mississippi, roots in riparian zones were studied in an attempt to quantify the effects of root reinforcement of the soil matrix. The roots of trees can be treated as elastic-reinforced elements, and a function of the tensile strength of the roots can be added directly to the Mohr-Coulomb equation for failure criteria.
