Mechanisms and impacts of future plant invasions: research agendas and management needs under disruptive social‐ecological change scenarios

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
No‐analogue futures are characteristic of the Anthropocene, but how global change, and societies' responses, will affect plant invasions remains unclear. Conducting research now to address future needs is crucial for guiding invasion management and policy.

Response of Livestock to Riparian Zone Exclusion [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Range Management, 1982
Fencing has been proposed as the best alternative for rapid restoration of streamside riparian zones. In this study the major portion of the streamside riparian zone was excluded by fencing. Use by cows with calves and by yearlings was evaluated on the remaining portion of the riparian and upland zones during the summer grazing season.

Buildings as accidental habitat: Where animals nest, sleep and forage

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Animals have long inhabited human buildings alongside us, but our understanding comes from isolated studies, such as reports of a possum in the roof or a bat in our walls. What we lack is the building's perspective: which building features actually serve as habitat and for whom?

Microbial communities across a hillslope‐riparian transect shaped by proximity to the stream, groundwater table, and weathered bedrock

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
Watersheds are important suppliers of freshwater for human societies. Within mountainous watersheds, microbial communities impact water chemistry and element fluxes as water from precipitation events discharge through soils and underlying weathered rock,

Forging environmentalism: The influence of childhood nature experiences on people's pro‐biodiversity value orientations and attitudes

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract With the rapid expansion of transnational biodiversity policy instruments promoting large‐scale landscape transformations that depend on public support for their success and feasibility, understanding the mechanisms underlying pro‐biodiversity attitudes has become important.

Characterizing a Populated Riparian Zone

open access: yesOpen Journal of Ecology, 2014
Developments adjacent to river, over the years, have impacted the ecological systems along riparian zones. This paper is to explore the changes occurring in a populated riparian zone. For over 35 years, the nipah swamps along the study site at the edge of Kuching city, Sarawak, Malaysia are subjected to human disturbances.

Participatory mapping and Nature's Contributions to People: Insights from the Amazon Delta

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding how traditional and coastal communities perceive and interact with nature is key to promoting inclusive conservation. This article examines human–nature interaction in the fishing village of Jubim, located in the Marajó Archipelago, delta of the Amazon River, Brazil.

Nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications for the sotol plant (Asparagaceae, Convallarioideae): A review

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) is a resilient desert plant that sustains ecosystems, cultures and livelihoods in Chihuahua Desert. Our review highlights its nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications in food, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and water remediation. By synthesizing evidence across disciplines, we show how sotol can
