Perchlorate natural attenuation in a riparian zone
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2014Multiple lines of evidence were used to document the natural attenuation of perchlorate in a shallow alluvial aquifer. In the upgradient, aerobic portion of the aquifer, perchlorate did not biodegrade. However, natural flushing by groundwater flow is reducing perchlorate concentrations in the aquifer over time.

An Ecosystem Perspective of Riparian Zones
BioScience, 1991R iparian zones are the interfaces between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. As ecotones, they encompass sharp gradients of environmental factors, ecological processes, and plant communities. Riparian zones are not easily delineated but are comprised of mosaics of landforms, communities, and environments within the larger landscape.

Persistent Elevated Nitrate in a Riparian Zone Aquifer
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2008AbstractStreamside vegetated buffer strips (riparian zones) are often assumed to be zones of ground water nitrate (NO3−) attenuation. At a site in southwestern Ontario (Zorra site), detailed monitoring revealed that elevated NO3−–N (4–93 mg L−1) persisted throughout a 100‐m‐wide riparian floodplain.

The riparian zone as a gatekeeper for subsurface stormflow
2023Subsurface stormflow (SSF) can be a major streamflow generation process in small catchments. It is known that SSF generated on the hillslopes of the catchment may change both in its chemical and quantitative composition on the way to the stream. This occurs primarily due to processes in the riparian zone. The riparian zone plays the role of a "reactor"

Edge-Effect of Ecological Riparian Zone
2009Ecological riparian zone is a transition zone between river ecosystem and land ecosystem interface, surface water and ground water, through which material, energy and information have been exchanged. Because ecological riparian zone is interlaced zone between different ecosystems in spacial structure, it has complex edge-effect, such as hydraulic edge ...

Response of Birds to Grazing of Riparian Zones
The Journal of Wildlife Management, 2000Livestock grazing of streams and associated riparian areas may negatively impact avian communities through direct disturbance and alteration of vegetation structure. We determined the effects of grazing on vegetation, avian abundance, species richness, and reproductive success on pasture streams and associated riparian habitats in southwest ...

The Vistula river and its riparian zones
Hydrobiologia, 1993Vistula, the main Polish river, runs from the very south to the very north of Poland, draining 54% of its area. It serves as a source of water and at the same time as recipient of sewage. The pollution of the river is high in its upper reaches, where the country is heavily populated and industrialized.

Insights into Riparian Zone Water Chemistry
Characterizing the spatio-temporal variability of water chemistry in the riparian zone is important for improving our understanding of the fundamental hydrological and biogeochemical processes that influence stream water quality. However, capturing this variability remains challenging due to the complexity of riparian environments, where dynamic ...Alexey Kuleshov +4 more

Nitrate Removal in Stream Riparian Zones
Journal of Environmental Quality, 1996AbstractThis review considers the role of stream riparian zones in regulating the transport of nitrate (NO−3) in groundwater flow from uplands to streams. The current consensus is that most riparian zones effectively remove NO−3 from subsurface water.
