Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

A Case Study on Recycling Industrial Wastewater with Nanofiltration Membrane Separation Technology

open access: yesMembranes
As pressure on water resources intensifies and stringent regulations for groundwater and surface water are enacted, wastewater recycling has emerged as a key research objective for many enterprises.

Cultivation of energy microalga Chlorella vulgaris with low–toxic sludge extract

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2021
Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated in different proportions of activated sludge extracts, which was from the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing tetrachlorophenol. The growth period of C.

A Risk Management Process for Consumers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Simply by using information technology, consumers expose themselves to considerable security risks. Because no technical or legal solutions are readily available, the only remedy is to develop a risk management process for consumers, similar to the ...

The unpredictably eruptive dynamics of spruce budworm populations in eastern Canada

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We examine historical population data for spruce budworm from several locations through the period 1930–1997, and use density‐dependent recruitment curves to test whether the pattern of population growth over time is more consistent with Royama's (1984; Ecological Monographs 54:429–462) linear R(t) model of harmonic oscillation at Green River New ...

Tail expectile process and risk assessment [PDF]

open access: yesBernoulli, 2020
Expectiles define a least squares analogue of quantiles. They are determined by tail expectations rather than tail probabilities. For this reason and many other theoretical and practical merits, expectiles have recently received a lot of attention, especially in actuarial and financial risk management.

Network topology drives population temporal variability in experimental habitat networks

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Habitat patches connected by dispersal pathways form habitat networks. We explored how network topology affects population outcomes in laboratory experiments using a model species (Daphnia carinata). Central habitat nodes in complex lattice networks exhibited lower temporal variability in population sizes, suggesting they support more stable ...

Performance and Bacterial Characteristics of Aerobic Granular Sludge in Treatment of Ultra-Hypersaline Mustard Tuber Wastewater

open access: yesFermentation, 2023
Mustard tuber wastewater (MTW) is an ultra-hypersaline high-strength acid organic wastewater. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been demonstrated to have high tolerance to high organic loading rate (OLR), high salinity, and broad pH ranges. However, most

Optimal control of risk process in a regime-switching environment

open access: yes, 2010
This paper is concerned with cost optimization of an insurance company. The surplus of the insurance company is modeled by a controlled regime switching diffusion, where the regime switching mechanism provides the fluctuations of the random environment ...

Risk Assessment in the Anaesthesia Process

open access: yes, 2012
In medical setting, risk can be defined using the ISO 12000-1 and the OSHAS 18001 standards. So, risk is defined as a measure of threat expressed in terms of the occurrence of an adverse event (i.e. its probability and its frequency) and a measure of its effects or its consequences. In anaesthesia, three criteria are commonly used to describe risk: the
