Subsurface Investigations of Cryo‐Hydrogeological Features in a High Arctic Catchment Under Transition

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, the internal structure and seasonal variations of cryo‐hydrogeological features were investigated in the Fuglebekken catchment, located near the Polish Polar Station Hornsund in Svalbard. Over a few years, rising air temperatures and intensified water circulation have significantly altered the distribution, extent, and state of ...

River Terraces along the Upper Mabechi River

open access: yesAnnals of The Tohoku Geographycal Asocciation, 1987
Formation of river terraces along the upper Mabechi River in northeast Japan is investigated tephrochronologically and its relation to piedmont gentle slope is discussed.Four terraces, that is, the Higher Terrace, Terrace I, Terrace II and Terrace III, are recognized in the study area.

Notes sur la géomorphologie d’une partie de la Côte de Beaupré [PDF]

open access: yes, 1962
Relief features of interest to the geomorphologist are numerous in the Québec City district. Among the more striking are the fault-line scarps at Montmorency Falls and on the island of Orléans and the various Champlain sea terraces among which Goldthwait'

Effects of Surface Characteristics on the Existence of Isolated Permafrost in Northeastern Mongolia

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Isolated patches of permafrost, where ground thermal changes are affected by ecosystem factors such as vegetation cover rather than climate, may be vulnerable to environmental disturbances in semiarid regions. However, the impacts of ecosystem factors remain underevaluated in Mongolia.

Age of Ohakea Terrace, Rangitikei River [PDF]

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, 1962
Abstract Gravel with logs of wood at Rangitawa Stream, Wellington land district, that has been radiocarbon-dated at 3,000 years before present was previously correlated with the gravel of the Ohakea Terrace. Loess is absent above the gravel with logs, but about a foot of loess overlies typical Ohakea Gravel.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation increases the bioavailability of zinc and iron in wheat grain

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Bread wheat is an important crop that supplies calories and nutrients to the global population. Enhancing the concentrations and bioavailability of essential micronutrients in wheat is crucial for human nutrition, and we investigated whether arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can contribute to the biofortification of wheat.

Middle pleistocene glaciation in Patagonia dated by cosmogenic-nuclide measurements on outwash gravels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The well-preserved glacial record in Argentine Patagonia offers a ~ 1 Ma archive of terrestrial climate extremes in southern South America. These glacial deposits remain largely undated beyond the range of radiocarbon dating at ca. 40 ka.

Landless peasants, soilless cultivation: British agricultural experimentation and intervention in post‐independence Iraq (1932–1958)

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
‘Greening’ is often depicted as an inherently benevolent practice, turning arid stretches of land into arable and fertile plots. However, by considering a longer history of place and taking archival records into account, such transformations are rendered more complex and, often, more fraught.

U/Th dating of Quaternary travertines at the middle River Llobregat (NE Iberian Peninsula, Nortwestern Mediterranean). Correlation with sea-level changes

open access: yesGeologica Acta, 2007
The dating of the fluvial terraces of the middle River Llobregat enabled one to establish a correlation between the sedimentation episodes in continental zones and in neighbouring deltaic and coastal areas in the NE Iberian continental margin.

Associating Local‐Scale Physical Habitat Assemblages With Reach‐Scale Stream Hydrogeomorphological Types in Mountain Headwater Catchments

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Building an understanding of river ecosystems often involves integrating information from different locations, spatial scales and points in time. Geomorphologists and ecologists have long considered ways to explore river ecosystems at different, hierarchical, spatial scales so that features observed locally can be linked to the character of ...
