RNA Control of HIV-1 Particle Size Polydispersity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
HIV-1, an enveloped RNA virus, produces viral particles that are known to be much more heterogeneous in size than is typical of non-enveloped viruses. We present here a novel strategy to study HIV-1 Viral Like Particles (VLP) assembly by measuring the ...

Visualizing Viral RNA Packaging Signals in Action

open access: yesJournal of Molecular Biology
Here we confirm, using genome-scale RNA fragments in assembly competition assays, that multiple sub-sites (Packaging Signals, PSs) across the 5' two-thirds of the gRNA of Satellite Tobacco Necrosis Virus-1 make sequence-specific contacts to the viral CPs helping to nucleate formation of its T = 1 virus-like particle (VLP).

Packaging in a yeast double-stranded RNA virus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Virology, 1995
The yeast virus ScV-L1 has only two genes, cap and pol, which encode the capsid polypeptide and the viral polymerase, respectively. The second gene is translated only as a cap-pol fusion protein. This fusion protein is responsible for recognition of a specific small stem and loop region of the viral plus strands, of 19 to 31 bases in length, ensuring ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Protein P7 of the cystovirus φ6 is located at the three-fold axis of the unexpanded procapsid. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
The objective of this study was to determine the location of protein P7, the RNA packaging factor, in the procapsid of the φ6 cystovirus. A comparison of cryo-electron microscopy high-resolution single particle reconstructions of the φ6 complete ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural dynamics of retroviral genome and the packaging

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2011
Retroviruses can cause diseases such as AIDS, leukemia and tumors, but are also used as vectors for human gene therapy. All retroviruses, except foamy viruses, package two copies of unspliced genomic RNA into their progeny viruses.

In situ structures of the segmented genome and RNA polymerase complex inside a dsRNA virus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Viruses in the Reoviridae, like the triple-shelled human rotavirus and the single-shelled insect cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV), all package a genome of segmented double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) inside the viral capsid and carry out endogenous ...
