Lick Northern Proper Motion Program. III. Lick NPM2 Catalog [PDF]
The Lick Northern Proper Motion (NPM) program, a two-epoch (1947-1988) photographic survey of the northern two-thirds of the sky (Dec. > -23 deg), has measured absolute proper motions, on an inertial system defined by distant galaxies, for 380,000 stars from 8

Mixing times via super-fast coupling [PDF]
We provide a coupling proof that the transposition shuffle on a deck of n cards is mixing of rate Cn(log{n}) with a moderate constant, C. This rate was determined by Diaconis and Shahshahani, but the question of a natural probabilistic coupling proof has been missing, and questions of its existence have been raised.

An all-sky study of compact, isolated high-velocity clouds [PDF]
We combine the catalogs of compact high-velocity HI clouds extracted from the LDS and HIPASS surveys and analyze the all-sky properties of the ensemble. Five principal observables are defined for the CHVC population: (1) the spatial deployment of the objects on the sky, (2) the kinematic distribution, (3) the number distribution of observed HI column ...

The effect of result‐based agri‐environmental payments on biodiversity: Evidence from Switzerland
Abstract We estimate the effects of result‐based agri‐environmental payments on biodiversity using a unique dataset containing information about plant vegetation. The data include information on surveyed plant species for a large number of randomly selected plots followed over a period of 20 years in Switzerland.

Speedups of ergodic group extensions [PDF]
We prove that for all ergodic extensions S_1 of a transformation by a locally compact second countable group G, and for all G-extensions S_2 of an aperiodic transformation, there is a relative speedup of S_1 that is relatively isomorphic to S_2. We apply this result to give necessary and sufficient conditions for two ergodic n-point or countable ...

Tracking Bronze Age ‘itinerant smiths’ in western Poland: insights from Nd and Sr isotope data
Abstract The neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of stone casting moulds found in graves of Bronze Age ‘itinerant smiths’ in western Poland was analysed to determine the provenance of their raw materials. For the first time in archaeological research, the Nd model age (TDM)—a highly useful parameter in studying the provenance of geological materials—has

In search of the perfect wilderness. Anchoritism in Cistercian art and spirituality
The anchoretic trend in Cistercian spirituality has always been the subject of many studies. Cistercian anchoritism has been analysed by researchers such as George Duby, Terryl Kinder, Janet Burton and Julie Krery, Mette Bruun and Emilia Jamroziak ...

The Kinematic and Spatial Deployment of Compact, Isolated High-Velocity Clouds [PDF]
We have identified a class of high-velocity clouds which are compact and apparently isolated. The clouds are compact in that they have angular sizes less than 2 degrees FWHM. They are isolated in that they are separated from neighboring emission by expanses where no emission is seen to the detection limit of the available data. Candidates for inclusion
