Robust optimization in simulation: Taguchi and Krige combined [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Optimization of simulated systems is the goal of many methods, but most methods assume known environments. We, however, develop a "robust" methodology that accounts for uncertain environments.

Target-Oriented Robust Optimization of Polygeneration Systems

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2015
Polygeneration systems offer the possibility of efficient, low-carbon production of different product streams from a single facility. Such systems take advantage of opportunities for integrating processes to achieve effective recovery of waste energy and

Robust mathematical programming for natural resource modeling under parametric uncertainty

open access: yesNatural Resource Modeling, 2010
Summary: Inaccurate specification of model coefficients can lead to false or distorted findings in modeling investigations of natural resource management. Hence, this paper outlines a decision framework for optimization problems in which only the bounded set of outcomes for uncertain parameters is known.

Stochastic Robust Mathematical Programming Model for Power System Optimization

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2016
This letter presents a stochastic robust framework for two-stage power system optimization problems with uncertainty. The model optimizes the probabilistic expectation of different worst-case scenarios with different uncertainty sets. A case study of unit commitment shows the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithms.

Optimum Scheduling the Electric Distribution Substations with a Case Study: An Integer Gaining-Sharing Knowledge-Based Metaheuristic Algorithm

open access: yesComplexity, 2020
This work is dedicated to the economic scheduling of the required electric stations in the upcoming 10-year long-term plan. The calculation of the required electric stations is carried out by estimating the yearly consumption of electricity over a long ...

Robust Plane Clustering Based on L1-Norm Minimization

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Plane clustering methods, typically, k plane clustering (kPC), play conclusive roles in the family of data clustering. Instead of point-prototype, they aim to seek multiple plane-prototype fitting planes as centers to group the given data into their ...

Residual tail twisting in ascidian larvae is stabilized by asymmetric myofibrils that resist bilateral symmetry restoration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ascidian Ciona larvae initially show strong clockwise tail twisting, which is largely corrected during development. However, a small residual twist remains. This study shows that organized helical myofibrils in tail muscles mechanically stabilize this residual asymmetry, preventing complete restoration of bilateral symmetry and revealing how embryos ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

On the Robustness of Global Optima and Stationary Solutions to Stochastic Mathematical Programs with Equilibrium Constraints, Part 2: Applications [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Optimization Theory and Applications, 2009
We consider a stochastic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (SMPEC) and show that, under certain assumptions, global optima and stationary solutions are robust with respect to changes in the underlying probability distribution. In particular, the discretization scheme sample average approximation (SAA), which is convergent for both ...

Convex Optimization of Markov Decision Processes Based on Z Transform: A Theoretical Framework for Two-Space Decomposition and Linear Programming Reconstruction

open access: yesMathematics
This study establishes a novel mathematical framework for stochastic maintenance optimization in production systems by integrating Markov decision processes (MDPs) with convex programming theory.
