Influence of bitumen-2 on Rock-Eval pyrolysis

open access: yesOrganic Geochemistry, 1991
Abstract Extractable organic matter (bitumen-2) remaining in previously-extracted whole rocks, or in kerogen concentrates that have not been thoroughly extracted after rock demineralization, can severely affect Rock-Eval data for kerogens. Appearing in the S2 rather than the S1 peak, the bitumen-2 acts to increase S2 yield.

Stepwise Rock-Eval pyrolysis as a tool for typing heterogeneous organic matter in soils

Journal of Analytical and Applied Pyrolysis, 2005
Abstract This paper presents an application of Rock-Eval pyrolysis for estimating the proportion of the components with different thermal stability in soil organic matter, the maturity of which corresponds to the early stage of diagenesis. For testing the validity of the modified Rock-Eval method, parallel series of pyrolysis were carried out on ...

Standardisation of Rock–Eval pyrolysis for the analysis of recent sediments and soils

Organic Geochemistry, 2012
Abstract Rock–Eval 6 analysis, a well established screening tool for petroleum geochemistry, is being increasingly used to characterise the varying species of organic matter (OM) in the bulk samples of recent aquatic sediments. This is particularly important due to recent scientific attention on the role of OM in biogeochemical distribution of ...

Diagenesis of Organic Matter in Peat: Rock–Eval Pyrolysis Data

Geochemistry International, 2019
Rock–Eval pyrolysis data were obtained on a collection of peat samples at various diagenesis stages (from depths of 0–350 cm) from the Gurskoe deposit, lower Amur area, and on producers of organic matter (OM). The pyrograms of the peat OM are superpositions of three peaks: (1) a low-temperature one, with temperatures of hydrocarbon release lower than ...

Effects of minerals on Rock Eval pyrolysis of kerogen

Journal of Thermal Analysis, 1991
To define the effect of common sedimentary minerals on pyrolysis of kerogen, previously separated and purified kerogen concentrates of alginite, amorphous liptinite and vitrinite were mixed with the following minerals: quartz, calcite, pyrite, limonite, kaolinite, bentonite and illite in various kerogen to mineral ratios.

Limitations of ‘Rock-Eval’ pyrolysis for typing organic matter

Organic Geochemistry, 1983
Abstract Laboratory experimentation on whole-rock ‘Rock-Eval’ pyrolysis has shown that the characterization of organic matter through the use of a modified van Krevelen diagram, in which the hydrogen and oxygen indices are substituted for the atomic H/C and O/C ratios, produces questionable results.

Limitations of Rock-Eval Pyrolysis Assay to Characterize Kerogen: ABSTRACT

AAPG Bulletin, 1982
Rock-Eval is a useful new tool to study sedimentary organic matter by pyrolysis and determination of hydrocarbons and CO2. Certain interpretive and operational aspects of the Rock-Eval technique, however, need to be carefully considered. Rock-Eval S2 peak or Hydrogen Index (HI = S2 normalized to organic carbon) is obtained by the flame ionization ...

Programmed pyrolysis (Rock-Eval) data and shale paleoenvironmental analyses: A review

Interpretation, 2015
Abstract We use public-domain data from programmed pyrolysis, collected using Rock-Eval or similar apparatuses, to illustrate the utility and challenges of using this method for paleoenvironmental analyses. These data are widely available and commonly collected and analyzed for a variety of purposes in the petroleum industry in the ...

Limitations of Rock-Eval Pyrolysis for Typing Organic Matter: ABSTRACT

AAPG Bulletin, 1981
Laboratory experimentation on whole-rock Rock-Eval pyrolysis has shown that the characterization of organic matter through the use of a modified van Krevelen-type diagram, where the hydrogen and oxygen indices are substituted for the H/C and O/C ratios, is questionable.
