closure of rock joints

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1986
Previously we verified experimentally that a generalized form of the Greenwood‐Williamson theory describing the elastic contact of two random surfaces adequately predicts the closure of joints in fused silica glass samples. Here we present a similar analysis for experiments on rock.

The effects of rock joint characteristics and normal stress level on the stiffness of rock joints

Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2020
The present research aims to study the effects of normal stress level on the rock joint stiffness. In addition, the sample size effect was also taken into consideration. A total of 96 direct shear tests on samples with various sizes and different rock materials were conducted and extensively analyzed.

The shear strength of rock and rock joints

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1976
Abstract Rock joints exhibit a wide spectrum of shear strength under the low effective normal stress levels operating in most rock engineering problems. This is due to the Strong influence of surface roughness and variable rock strength. Conversely, under the high effective normal stress levels of interest to tectonophysicists the shear strength ...

Finite element for rock joints and interfaces

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1973
The objective of this paper is to present a method for dynamic stress analysis of saturated soil structures subjected to earthquake loading. The soil is idealized as a fluid saturated porous solid. The coupled equations of motion of the finite element discretized system are solved by a step-by-step integration scheme to determine the motion of the ...

Mechanics of Jointing in Rocks

Geological Magazine, 1959
AbstractThe current theories dealing with the mechanics of joint development are discussed critically. An analysis of the stress conditions which can exist in competent rocks in the crust is presented. The conclusion is reached that “Master” and “Regional” Joints can be, generically, either “tensional” or “shear” structures.

Implications of Joint Properties on the Strength of a Jointed Rock Mass

Advances in Unsaturated Soil, Geo-Hazard, and Geo-Environmental Engineering, 2011
In order to minimize the environmental and physical hazards of rock slope failures in deep open cut mines, evaluation of rock mass strength with a reasonable degree of accuracy is required. The task is made much more difficult due to the presence of discontinuities or joints, as the strength of a rock mass depends on both the strength of intact rock ...
