Progressive failure of jointed rocks

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences, 2004
As jointed rocks consist of joints embedded within blocks of ‘intact’ rock, the behaviour of these rocks will depend on the behaviour of the joints and the intact rock blocks. In jointed rocks, there are two levels of heterogeneity: (1) the differences in properties between the rock blocks and the joints and (2) the heterogeneity within the rock blocks

The shear strength of rock and rock joints

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1976
Abstract Rock joints exhibit a wide spectrum of shear strength under the low effective normal stress levels operating in most rock engineering problems. This is due to the Strong influence of surface roughness and variable rock strength. Conversely, under the high effective normal stress levels of interest to tectonophysicists the shear strength ...

Rock joints: Theory, constitutive equations

1995
Publisher Summary This chapter describes constitutive equations for rock joints that include phenomena, such as friction, dilatancy, damage of surface roughness, and the ability to treat arbitrary small deformation histories. The major features of the constitutive theories described in this chapter are that they are based on specific microstructural ...
