Bioengineered 3D hPSC‐Cholangiocyte Ducts With Physiological Signals for Biliary Disease Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Tian and colleagues generated a bioengineered bile duct from human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)‐derived intrahepatic cholangiocytes within a high‐throughput, 384‐well platform to systematically examine the influence of biliary physiological signals including fluid flow, stromal cells and bile acids, and models intrahepatic biliary disease progression ...

Emergence of Bulk CsCl Structure in (CsCl)nCs+ Cluster Ions

open access: yes, 2000
The emergence of CsCl bulk structure in (CsCl)nCs+ cluster ions is investigated using a mixed quantum-mechanical/semiempirical theoretical approach. We find that rhombic dodecahedral fragments (with bulk CsCl symmetry) are more stable than rock-salt ...

A Tri‐Culture Heart‐on‐a‐Chip Platform With iPSC‐Derived Cardiac Cells for Predictive Cardiotoxicity Testing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the first entirely isogenic heart‐on‐chip, unifying cardiomyocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells from a single iPSC source. The platform reveals a critical biological insight: the endothelium actively shields cardiac tissue from drug‐induced toxicity, challenging the predictive accuracy of conventional, avascular models for ...

Fracture evolution and anisotropic mechanical properties of layered rock based on discrete element modeling and experimental study

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal
Since numerous geotechnical activities crossing layered rock masses, a comprehensive understanding of their mechanical behavior is crucial for engineering stability assessment.

The search for the cause of the low albedo of the moon [PDF]

open access: yes
Experimentation concerning lunar weathering and its effect on the albedo of the surface cover consisted of: (1) determination of the surface chemical composition of lunar soil and ground-up rock samples by Auger electron spectroscopy, (2) measurement of

3D Soft Hydrogels Induce Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells “Deep” Quiescence

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Three‐dimensional soft hydrogels mimicking the bone marrow niche induce deep quiescence in human mesenchymal stem cells. Unlike 2D culture, 3D matrices halt proliferation, regulate cell‐cycle and quiescence markers, and downregulate mTORC1 signaling, preserving stem cell phenotype and therapeutic potential ex vivo.

Investigation of Lateral Stress Relief on theStability of PHI = 0 DEG Slopes Using Laboratory, Fracture Mechanics, and Finite Element Method Approaches [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Total stress analyses of purely cohesive cut slopes utilize the undrained shear strength for slope stability analyses. These slopes can have an in-situ lateral earth pressure that is greater than the vertical pressure.

Ferroelectric Quantum Dots for Retinomorphic In‐Sensor Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work has provided a protocol for fabricating retinomorphic phototransistors by integrating ferroelectric ligands with quantum dots. The resulting device combines ferroelectricity, optical responsiveness, and low‐power operation to enable adaptive signal amplification and high recognition accuracy under low‐light conditions, while supporting ...

Dynamic mechanical characteristics and failure mode of serpentine under a three-dimensional high static load and frequent dynamic disturbance.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
The improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was used to study the dynamic mechanical properties and failure characteristics of surrounding rock in deep rock mass engineering that is under high stress and affected by blasting excavation and other ...
