We have discussed in the previous chapter, how deformability varies with direction. Laboratory and in situ testing have shown that the strength of anisotropic rocks also varies with spatial orientation. Intuitively, both deformability and strength must be affected by the anisotropic character especially if there is symmetry of any kind.
