Vortex rings from notched nozzles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The formation of a vortex ring from a piston/nozzle apparatus depends on the nozzle exit's shape. Here we study the formation mechanism and the evolution of asymmetrical rings from notched nozzles using direct numerical simulations. Three types of nozzle are used: i) V-notched; ii) A-notched and iii)W-notched nozzles.

Applying Energy Dissipation Rate GNSS Accelerometry to a Non‐Circular Orbiting Satellite

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 12, Issue 4, April 2025.
Abstract The increase in the number of objects in Low‐Earth Orbit has heightened the demand for high‐accuracy orbital prediction models driven by dependable measurements of thermospheric mass density (TMD). Given the added cost and complexity burden of equipping satellites with high precision accelerometers, recent attention has focused on alternative ...

Shape of Big Rockets [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Recent publications discuss the size of chemical rockets for long-distance travel, to be launched from a planet. Here I point out that such a rocket cannot be tall and slim but will be short and fat.

How good are large language models at product risk assessment?

open access: yesRisk Analysis, Volume 45, Issue 4, Page 766-789, April 2025.
Abstract Product safety professionals must assess the risks to consumers associated with the foreseeable uses and misuses of products. In this study, we investigate the utility of generative artificial intelligence (AI), specifically large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, across a number of tasks involved in the product risk assessment process ...

Nozzle Optimization of Dual Thrust Rocket Motors

open access: yes, 2019
Optimizing the nozzle of a solid propellant rocket motor plays an essential rule in the overall performance of the motor. In this paper, the investigation of an optimization model of dual thrust propellant rocket motors will be presented. Due to having two phases of thrust in this type of rocket motors, determination of the rocket nozzle expansion ...
