The motion of a curling rock

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1996
We present a plausible physical model that accounts for the motion of a curling rock. The principal features of the model are (i) that the kinetic friction induces melting of the ice with the consequence that the curling rock experiences both "dry friction," when encountering solid ice, as well as "wet friction," for contact areas that pass over the ...

Rock Motion Characterization

2017
As stated in Chap. 2, rock (as well as soil) ground motion characterization for PSHA requires that both the median response spectral acceleration and its standard deviation (aleatory variability) be estimated by appropriate algorithms, such as GMPEs or stochastic models. In Sect. 2.5 of Chap.

Robust control of wing rock motion

IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and European Control Conference, 2011
In this paper, linear and nonlinear robust control strategies are proposed to suppress wing rock motion. The approaches are based on the uncertainty and disturbance estimator (UDE), which calculates and robustly cancels system uncertainties and input disturbances with appropriate filtering.

Pole placement method to control the rocking motion of rigid blocks

Engineering structures, 2018
In recent years only a very small number of studies analysed the use of active or semi-active control methods in order to avoid the overturning of rigid block-like structures under base excitation. In this paper, an active control algorithm, based on the

Molten rocks in motion

Nature, 1999
Evidence for tectonic activity under the ocean comes from molten rocks that erupt at mid-ocean ridges. Chemical differences between volcanic rocks found at the ridge and nearby support a passive model of mantle flow whereby magma rises to the surface in response to the plates moving apart.

Force‐dependent motion reversal in quantum rocking ratchets

Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society, 2023
AbstractIt is well known that at low temperatures, the direction of motion for a quantum rocking ratchet in an asymmetric periodic potential (with a period and an energy barrier ), driven by an external fluctuating force (), can be opposite to the direction for the analogous classical ratchet operating at high temperature (Reimann et al, Phys.

ADAPTIVE CONTROL OF THE ROCKING MOTION OF ART OBJECTS

Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering (COMPDYN 2015), 2015
The seismic behaviour of many art objects and obelisks can be analysed in the context of the seismic response of rigid blocks. Starting from the pioneering works by Housner (1963), a large number of analytical studies of the rigid block dynamics were proposed.

Comment on "The motion of a curling rock"

Canadian Journal of Physics, 2003
We investigate the model adopted in a recent paper in which the authors seek to explain the observed trajectory of a curling rock. We question the basis upon which the model is built, namely, frictional asymmetry arising from kinematic melting of the ice, and establish that the forms assumed for fluid friction motion are incorrect.
