Dog attacks on wild desert tortoises: A risk model

Domestic dogs attack and severely injure wild desert tortoises at the urban and ex‐urban interface with deserts. Severe trauma to tortoises increased 4 times to shell and limbs and 16.5 times to the gular horn over the decades between the 1970s and 2000s. Low‐Hysteresis Cellulose‐Based Hydrogels for Strain Detecting

Low‐hysteresis hydrogel with high cellulose content is prepared. The modified cellulose is prepared through a sequential periodate oxidation and borohydride reduction process. The hydrogel can be used as a strain sensor with a gauge factor of 1.1 in the 0%–300% sensing range.

Fruit‐quality tradeoffs generate asymmetry in plant reliance on mutualistic frugivores

Seed dispersal is a fundamental ecological process influencing the evolution of plant life‐history strategies. In fleshy‐fruited plants dispersed by mutualistic frugivores, variation in fruit traits among closely related species may shape the temporal and spatial dynamics of dispersal events critical to population success.
