Role-based access control (RBAC) first appeared in the early 1990s. Since then, a lot of theoretical and practical research has been completed. We will discuss the origins of RBAC, survey some of the variations of RBAC and the research results obtained. we will then look at how it is being used today, and speculate on its future.

Reconciling role based management and role based access control
Proceedings of the second ACM workshop on Role-based access control - RBAC '97, 1997Role Based Access Control is only a subset of the security management and distributed systems management. Yet, the characteristics and use of the role objects in RBAC or Role Based Management (RBM) may differ significantly. In this paper we outline a Role Management Framework based on the specification of policies and examine its differences and ...

A role-based access control for intranet security
IEEE Internet Computing, 1997Secure intranets are founded on the protection of logical resources accessible in corporate enterprises. The paper discusses I-RBAC, role-based access control for intranet security which offers efficient security management based on varied levels of role authorizations.

Rule support for role-based access control
Proceedings of the tenth ACM symposium on Access control models and technologies, 2005The administration of users and access rights in large enterprises is a complex and challenging task. Role-based access control (RBAC) is a powerful concept for simplifying access control. In particular, Enterprise Roles spanning across different IT systems are increasingly used as a basis for company-wide security management.

Garbled role-based access control in the cloud
Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing, 2017Security has always been a major concern in the cloud environment because outsourcing leads to the new security issues. Privacy risks related to the job assignment are the dominating hurdles in the wide organizations like research, military and intelligence.

Context sensitivity in role-based access control
ACM SIGOPS Operating Systems Review, 2002This paper describes an extended role-based access control (RBAC) model, which makes RBAC sensitive to the context of an attempted operation. Traditional RBAC does not specify whether the permissions associated with a role enable access to a particular object, or to some subset

Role-Based Access Control, we discuss the principles of role-based access control. Two security extensions of the generic UML language—SecureUML and UMLsec—are considered to show various RBAC concerns and application principles. Based on the RBAC domain, a set of transformation rules are defined to link both approaches together and to support the ...

Role-based access control (RBAC) models have been introduced by several groups of researchers. We first introduce the basic components of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) RBAC model and the role graph model; then we contrast some of the details of these two models.
