The Role of Hierarchies in Exploratory Data Mining [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
In a broad range of data mining tasks, the fundamental challenge is to efficiently explore a very large space of alternatives. The difficulty is two-fold: first, the size of the space raises computational challenges, and second, it can introduce data sparsity issues even in the presence of very large datasets. In this talk, well consider how the use of

Retina‐Inspired Bi‐Based Terahertz Photonic Neuromorphic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Combined with effective band alignment and substrate engineering, bismuth materials are introduced to form terahertz photonic bio‐inspired devices with picosecond short‐term plasticity to enable multi‐scene visual perception. Thus obtained hardware through the terahertz optical neural network (THz‐ONN) demonstrates high recognition accuracy, providing ...

Structural Colors from Modulated Topological Defects in Molecular Smectic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Rather than using dyes and pigments, nature produces the colors of some butterflies and beetles through optical interference phenomena. This study describes an original biomimetic strategy exploiting the spontaneous formation of modulated linear defects in thin films of 8CB, a common molecular liquid crystal.
