Rolling motion in moving droplets

Drops moving on a substrate under the action of gravity display both rolling and sliding motions. The two limits of a thin sheet-like drop in sliding motion on a surface, and a spherical drop in roll, have been extensively studied. We are interested in intermediate shapes.

Rolling motion and crumpled surfaces

We discuss some aspects of a paper which appeared recently in this journal [F. F. Lima, V. M. Oliveira, and M. A. F. Gomes, Am. J. Phys. 61, 421–422, 1993] in which the fractional dimension of rolling crumpled surfaces is measured experimentally. We show that this experiment may not actually be measuring fractal dimension kinematically at all.

On the Sensitivity of the Roll Motion of an FPSO

This paper describes a theoretical model that has been used to investigate the roll motion of an FPSO. The Statoil operated Norne FPSO at Haltenbanken off central Norway has been used as a reference for the investigation. The model is based on linear potential theory. The viscous roll damping has been incorporated by linearizing the effect.
