Design and Validation of a Modular Rolling Contact Fatigue/Rolling-Sliding Contact Fatigue Testing Machine

2020
A variety of testing machines have been developed to test rolling contact fatigue (RCF) and rolling–sliding contact fatigue (RSCF). Many of the RSCF machines have been designed to run at a fixed slide ratio using a geared driveline between the test specimen and the load wheel, which limits the versatility.

Critical stresses in rolling contact fatigue

Wear, 1981
Abstract An analysis of the main hypotheses concerning the critical stresses in rolling contact fatigue is presented. It is considered that none of these hypotheses correlates adequately with all the experimental aspects of the phenomenon of rolling contact fatigue.

Modelling of Rolling Contact Fatigue of Rails

Key Engineering Materials, 2006
Rail dark spot defect, also termed as squat failure or shelling, is a rolling contact fatigue failure which occurs frequently on the high speed traffic railway rails. The main goal of this study is to develop a computational model for simulation of the squat phenomena on rails in rail-wheel contact.

Rolling contact fatigue of a rail steel

Wear, 1987
Abstract A laboratory test program to determine the rolling contact fatigue behavior of a 0.5 wt.% C steel under water-lubricated conditions is described. It is shown that the relation between fatigue life and contact pressure is a function of creepage.

Surface fatigue of polymers in rolling contact

Wear, 1998
Results of the study into the forms of surface failure of cross-linked polystyrene, polycarbonate and polymethylmethacrylate resulting from rolling contact are presented. Also the influence of two different lubricating liquids on the time to failure is quantitatively assessed and discussed.

Assessment of the Rolling Contact Fatigue

2017
There are many methods for the service life estimation of the contact surfaces. The life of the cam mechanisms is commonly estimated theoretically. Experimental testing of the rolling contact fatigue is time consuming and this article deals with the description of the most suitable methods for a fast and easy assessment of rolling contact fatigue. Rolling Contact Fatigue of Wheel and Rail

Materials Testing, 2012
Abstract This investigation describes rolling contact fatigue phenomena in the wheel/rail-contact area of railway vehicles. In the scope of this paper new calculation, experimental results of stresses and strains within the wheel as well as a new method the determination of fatigue strength are presented.

Nonmetallic Inclusions and Rolling Contact Fatigue

1975
Rolling contact fatigue tests were carried out on an angular contact ball bearing test rig at a low unit pressure (Po = 260 kp/mm2). The results show a sound “relative correlation” between the rolling contact fatigue and the content of nonmetallic inclusions.

Parametric Simulation of Rolling Contact Fatigue

ASME 2008 Rail Transportation Division Fall Technical Conference, 2008
Simulations of dynamic vehicle performance were used by the Wheel Defect Prevention Research Consortium (WDPRC) to explore which track and vehicle variables affect wheel fatigue life. A NUCARS® model was used to efficiently examine the effects of a multitude of parameters including wheel/rail profiles, wheel/rail lubrication, truck type, curvature ...
