The Nonadiabatic Nature of the Substituent Effects in Azobenzene

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
Unified nonadiabatic switching: thermal Z→E isomerization of para‐substituted azobenzenes proceeds through a single nonadiabatic rotational pathway. The iconic bell‐shaped Hammett plot is a σp artifact, not a reflection of a mechanistic change, exposing the limits of single‐reference density functional theory (DFT) and establishing activation entropy ...

The production of Roman metal screw threads - extended version

open access: yesEXARC Journal
During the Roman period, small metal screw threads were used both as fastenings and to impart motion. This paper, which is an extended version of my previous article, will show that it is possible to produce metal screw threads using very simple ...

MOFs as New Catalytic Platform for Covalent Adaptable Networks: Catalysis Meets Reinforcement

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
A novel heterogeneous catalytic platform for covalent adaptable networks (CANs) is introduced by immobilizing bases of low molecular weight on metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs). The obtained catalyst UiO‐TBD benefits from the high loading capacity of the MOF and demonstrates a higher thermal stability relative to free TBD.

Revisiting paravertebral muscles in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) (Leporidae; Lagomorpha)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Domesticated European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have long been chosen as laboratory model organisms. Despite this, there has been no definitive study of the vertebral musculature of wild rabbits. Relevant descriptions of well‐studied veterinary model mammals (such as dogs) are generally applicable, but not appropriate for a species ...

T. rex cognition was T. rex‐like—A critical outlook on diverging views of the neurocognitive evolution in dinosaurs

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract A recent debate has emerged between Caspar et al. (2024) and Herculano‐Houzel (2023) on inferring extinct dinosaur cognition by estimating brain neuron counts. While thought‐provoking, the discussion largely overlooks the function of cognition, as well as partly neglects the difficulties involved in estimating neuron numbers, which according ...

An Experimental Exploration of the Earliest Soapmaking

open access: yesEXARC Journal
Soap is a substance now taken for granted, but there is uncertainty, myth and misinformation about its development, and little scholarly attention has been paid to the likely circumstances surrounding its discovery.
