Comparative investigation of mortars from Roman Colosseum and cistern
Thermochimica Acta, 2005Mortar from the Roman Colosseum and a Roman cistern from Albano Laziale were characterized with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)).

Hydrophobic coatings and organic additives in Hellenistic-Roman mortars

Hydraulic roman mortars: not always pozzolanic
2004In the study of ancient mortars, important archaeometric informations concern the investigation on the production technologies with particular care to the raw materials utilized. As regards the aggregate, it’s easy to recognize the kind, amount and granulometry, but in the case of binder, the characterization and the individuation of the limestone used

Lime–pozzolana mortars in Roman catacombs: composition, structures and restoration
Cement and Concrete Research, 2005Abstract Analyses of microsamples collected from Roman catacombs and samples of lime–pozzolana mortars hardened in the laboratory display higher contents in carbonated binder than other subaerial Roman monuments. The measured environmental data inside the Saint Callistus and Domitilla catacombs show a constant temperature of 15–17 °C, a high CO2 ...

A thermal study approach to roman age wall painting mortars
Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, 2010Roman ancient mortars have been widely studied, in connection with both diagnosis and application required for restoring. Thermoanalytical experiments performed on mortars from Pompeii and Herculaneum provided a very good understanding of the technology employed.

ON-Tech: from Roman mortars to green innovative solutions
2022ON-Tech project is based on the idea to produce modern and green restoration mortars according to the recipe of ancient mortars from the Trajan Aqueduct (Rome, II century AD), which showed high durability and resistance thanks to a synergic combination of raw materials, grain size and production technology. The main objective is to realize eco-friendly
