Abstract This chapter examines the development of Romani (Gypsy) music in Bulgaria and Macedonia from the Ottoman period and first decades of the nineteenth century to the present day. The time span covered is divided into four periods, each of which is associated with specific contexts and media in which Romani musicians have performed.
