2014Romi u Europi i Hrvatskoj zbog svoje rasprostranjenosti, transnacionalnog identiteta, čine posebnu, povijesnu autohtonu manjina. Nakon tisuću godina i mnogostruko više kilometara daleko od pradomovine Indije migracijski procesi su uvjetovali značajne posljedice za romski narod.

Romima Bajašima materinski su jezik dijalektalni varijeteti dakorumunjskoga. Osim pod nazivom Bajaši poznati su i pod drugim imenima, a osim u Hrvatskoj prisutni su diljem jugoistočne Europe, pa i u samoj Rumunjskoj. U Hrvatskoj Romi kojima je rumunjski materinski jezik čine minimalno polovicu ukupne romske populacije.

Položaj Roma u mislima prosvijećenih vladara 18. stoljeća zasigurno je izazivao potrebu da te nestalne i nekorisne (ili nedovoljno korisne) članove društva prisile da postanu njihovi vjerni i produktivni podanici. Terezijanske i jozefinske odredbe težile su upravo takvom oblikovanju Roma s krajnjim ciljem njihove asimilacije.

Ovaj rad istražuje evoluciju prikazivanja Roma u filmu, od ranih stereotipnih prikaza do suvremenih, slojevitijih portreta. U početku, filmski prikazi Roma bili su ograničeni na stereotipe egzotičnosti i mističnosti, često zanemarujući složenost i bogatstvo romske kulture.
