Urban Green Spaces Set the Stage for Rare Interspecific Allopreening Between Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus) and Black Vultures (Coragyps atratus)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Observations in San Antonio, Texas documented rare interspecific allopreening between crested caracaras and black vultures at Phil Hardberger Park. This represents the first recorded instance of such behavior in an urban green space, expanding the known ecological and geographic scope of interspecies social interactions.

Urban heat mitigation under realistic roof and land area constraints

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
To simulate realistic impact of rooftop-based heat mitigation strategies (HMS), we introduce a new capability in the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the building effect parameterization urban physics module.

Productive Green Roofs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Although interest in productive gardening, as part of a healthy, high density city lifestyle, is growing rapidly, severe spatial constraints limit opportunities for ground-level community gardens and urban farms.

Bioretention Performance Under Tropical Conditions: Experimental Analysis of Hydrological Controls and Design Implications

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 1, January 2026.
Schematic representation of the main instrumentation used to monitor the rain garden, including the meteorological station and water‐level sensor, together with an illustration of the bioretention layered media. The graphic abstract also presents an example of the resulting hydrographs, showing surface, subsurface, and inflow volumes.

RESEARCH ON ORNAMENTAL PLANTS APPLIED TO ROOFTOP GARDENS

open access: yesAIJ Journal of Technology and Design, 2010
Eighty ornamental plants, such as perennial plants, bulbous plants, and shrubs, were planted into the experimental rooftop garden made of the rain water storage type planting base, and the growth experiment was conducted. The selected species differed widely in their form characteristics and weatherability.

Assessing the viability of hydroponics for low‐income farmers in South Africa's urban agriculture sector: An urban political ecology perspective

open access: yesUrban Agriculture &Regional Food Systems, Volume 11, Issue 1, 2026.
Abstract Urban agriculture in densely populated areas is significantly constrained by space, leading to interest in vertical farming solutions like hydroponics. This study evaluates hydroponics’ viability in Cape Town's low‐income urban areas as a useful supplement to most research, which focuses on cities in the Global North.

Hydrogel Utilization and Water Management for Annual and Perennial Herbs in an Extensive Green Roof Environment

open access: yesHorticulturae
Extensive green roofs can be used to provide spaces for local agriculture in urban environments, although extreme moisture and temperature conditions typically found in these systems can often be challenging for crop production.
