Essentially, the root canal system can be divided into pulp chamber, located within the anatomic dental crown, and the root canal space, found inside the radicular portion of the tooth. Other important components of the internal anatomy of teeth include canal orifices, apical foramina, apical ramifications, and accessory, lateral, and furcation canals.

Hundreds of bacterial species inhabit the mouth, because of bacterial interactions, nutrient availability and low oxygen potentials in root canals with necrotic pulp, the number of bacterial species present in endodontic infections are restricted. These selective conditions lead to the predominance of facultive and strictly anaerobic microorganisms ...

Abstract Thirteen hundred teeth were sectioned vertically in order to study their root canal morphology. A high incidence of double canals in single roots was found, and this was especially true in the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary molars. Careful exploration of the pulpal floor is indicated if these additional major canals are to be detected ...

The root filling is the final leg of the endodontic triad of instrumentation, disinfection, and obturation. The purpose of treatment (prevention or cure of apical periodontitis) is served by the functions of the obturation (sealing, killing microbes, and filling the space), which depend on some properties of the materials.

Several obturation techniques are available for root canal treatment. Selection of any technique is determined not only by operator preference but also key factors including canal anatomy, preparation technique used and the unique treatment objectives of each case.
