Root caries: a periodontal perspective

Journal of Periodontal Research, 2013
Background and objectiveA prevailing dental problem in the periodontal patient is root caries. Specifically, periodontal involvement often results in root surfaces becoming exposed and at risk for this condition. Periodontal therapy often leads to increased gingival recession as well, and the associated increased root caries risk may compromise the ...

Relationship of diet to root caries

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1995
A Nutrition and Oral Health Study was conducted on 141 middle-aged and elderly adults (54% female and 46% male; aged 47-83 y, mean = 67; 51% college educated; and 89% white). This study reports on the relationship between root caries and diet. Nutritional composition was derived from two 3-d food diaries.

Specificities of Caries on Root Surface

2017
Variations in organic and inorganic composition and morphology may determine different susceptibilities of root surfaces to caries. Subsequent to gingival recession, root surfaces become exposed and those areas where Sharpey's fibers system was once inserted into the cementum are converted into canals for microbial penetration.

Diagnosis and Prediction of Root Caries

Advances in Dental Research, 1993
Diagnosis is the process of recognizing diseases by their characteristic clinical signs and symptoms. Diagnostic ability varies considerably between and among examiners, and, consequently, the accuracy of the diagnosis can be questioned. Root caries is a disease for which there are several clinical signs (location, color, surface texture, and surface ...

Root Surface Biofilms and Caries

2017
Following gingival recession, which increases with age, the root surface becomes exposed, creating new environments for microbial colonization and biofilm formation. The formation of root surface biofilms is influenced by the availability and composition of saliva and gingival crevicular fluid; they provide components for the conditioning film ...

Endogenous Enzymes in Root Caries

2017
Similar to coronal caries, root caries results from a disequilibrium of the de-remineralization balance in favor of the demineralization process. It mainly involves a bacterial shift in favor of an increase in the proportion of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria.

The Epidemiology of Root Surface Caries

Journal of Dental Research, 1990
Although a secular decline is being seen in coronal caries in children in industrialized countries, there appears to be a relatively high prevalence of root caries, with chronologically older adults exhibiting the highest prevalences. This paper reviews the descriptive and analytical epidemiology of root caries as found in recent national, regional ...

Root caries.

Current opinion in dentistry, 1992
Increasing interest in root caries has resulted in several reports during the year. Problems with diagnosis, epidemiology, structural histopathology, and treatments have clarified some problems concerning root caries. Only active lesions should be registered, but it is important to search for lesions in the periodontal pocket.

The Clinical Identification of Root Caries

Gerodontology, 1986
This paper discusses a variety of considerations associated with the clinical identification of root caries. While focusing upon this clinical identification process from the perspective of the clinical researcher, the differing diagnostic needs between the clinical researcher and the dental practitioner are frequently addressed.
