Endogenous Enzymes in Root Caries
2017Similar to coronal caries, root caries results from a disequilibrium of the de-remineralization balance in favor of the demineralization process. It mainly involves a bacterial shift in favor of an increase in the proportion of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria.

Root surface caries and associated factors
European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1990Abstract – The prevalence of root surfaces caries in 208 randomly selected 55, 65, and 75‐yr‐old Swedes was related to the frequency of coronal caries, the number of remaining teeth and to bacteriologic, salivary, and dietary variables. At least one decayed or filled root surface was found in 89% of the individuals and all of those had also ...

Current opinion in dentistry, 1992
Increasing interest in root caries has resulted in several reports during the year. Problems with diagnosis, epidemiology, structural histopathology, and treatments have clarified some problems concerning root caries. Only active lesions should be registered, but it is important to search for lesions in the periodontal pocket.

Monitoring of Root Caries Lesions
2017The early detection of root caries is essential for the implementation of appropriate preventive therapeutic regimes. Subsequent monitoring of lesions is required to determine the outcomes of such therapies. While much research activity has been seen in the detection and monitoring of enamel caries, this has not been seen in root caries - despite the ...

Assessing Root Caries in Populations: The Evolution of the Root Caries Index
Journal of Public Health Dentistry, 1980This paper traces the history of the epidemiologic assessment of root caries over the past 30 years. This history clearly points out that a critical junction has been reached between the state-of-the art for the reporting of root caries and the demand placed on research and service components of the oral health system.

Multifactorial modeling for root caries prediction
Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, 1992AbstractThe study was pan of a series of investigations aiming at the development of diagnostic caries tests for screening of risk subjects. The material consisted of 100 adult subjects (x̄ 62 yr. range 47–79 yr), 50 of these under chronic medication. The series of tests included two chair side registrations, i.e.

Future directions for root caries research
Gerodontology, 1993Interest among researchers in the diagnosis, aetiology, prevention, and treatment of root caries has increased substantially over the past two decades. However, there are some fundamental problems impeding the advancement of the field which remain to be addressed and resolved. A universally acceptable definition of root caries is not yet available. The gums cover the roots of teeth in younger humans but recede in older people beginning with the fifth decade. Dental enamel covers the tooth to the gum margin but when the gums recede the roots are exposed, subjecting the exposed root surface to abrasion and decay.
