Human Root Caries: Microbiota of a Limited Number of Root Caries Lesions

Caries Research, 1996
The microbiota of root caries lesions of different grades of severity were studied. Fourteen lesions were examined. The experimental design of the study allowed correlation of histopathologically distinguishable stages with specific and distinct microbial populations.

Root Surface Biofilms and Caries

2017
Following gingival recession, which increases with age, the root surface becomes exposed, creating new environments for microbial colonization and biofilm formation. The formation of root surface biofilms is influenced by the availability and composition of saliva and gingival crevicular fluid; they provide components for the conditioning film ...

The Diagnosis of Root Caries

Journal of Dental Education, 2001
The most commonly used clinical signs of root caries are visual (color, contour, surface cavitation) and tactile (surface texture) descriptions of a lesion. The traditional methods of visual‐tactile diagnosis for root caries can produce a correct diagnosis but usually not until the lesion is at an advanced stage.

Endogenous Enzymes in Root Caries

2017
Similar to coronal caries, root caries results from a disequilibrium of the de-remineralization balance in favor of the demineralization process. It mainly involves a bacterial shift in favor of an increase in the proportion of acidogenic and aciduric bacteria.

Root surface caries and associated factors

European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1990
Abstract – The prevalence of root surfaces caries in 208 randomly selected 55, 65, and 75‐yr‐old Swedes was related to the frequency of coronal caries, the number of remaining teeth and to bacteriologic, salivary, and dietary variables. At least one decayed or filled root surface was found in 89% of the individuals and all of those had also ...

Root caries.

Current opinion in dentistry, 1992
Increasing interest in root caries has resulted in several reports during the year. Problems with diagnosis, epidemiology, structural histopathology, and treatments have clarified some problems concerning root caries. Only active lesions should be registered, but it is important to search for lesions in the periodontal pocket.

Monitoring of Root Caries Lesions

2017
The early detection of root caries is essential for the implementation of appropriate preventive therapeutic regimes. Subsequent monitoring of lesions is required to determine the outcomes of such therapies. While much research activity has been seen in the detection and monitoring of enamel caries, this has not been seen in root caries - despite the ...
