Modelling Root System Growth and Architecture

2000
For any complex system, and particularly for the root system interacting with the rest of the plant and the environment, a model can be a helpful tool for synthesising knowledge to produce more global representations and for testing hypotheses on the interacting mechanisms derived from experimental results.

Fractal Characterization of Root System Architecture

Functional Ecology, 1992
1. The fractal dimensions of seedling root systems of two grasses and two dicots growing in situ against glass sheets have been measured using the dividers method. Values were mostly below 1.5. 2. D was little affected by nutrient supply in Trifolium pratense, but differed significantly between four other species. 3.

Root system architecture, physiological and transcriptional traits of soybean (Glycine max L.) in response to water deficit: A review.

Physiologia Plantarum : An International Journal for Plant Biology, 2020
Drought stress is the main limiting factor for global soybean growth and production. Genetic improvement for water and nutrient uptake efficiency is critical to advance tolerance and enable more sustainable and resilient production, underpinning yield ...

Modelling Root System Architecture: Experimental Data on Maize Root System Geometry

1991
ABSTRACT The arrangement of primary roots around the maize stem and their trajectories in the soil were studied in a deep loamy field with a favourable structure. The angles between roots around the stem were measured in 63 plants. The trajectories of 29 roots visible on profile walls were drawn on horizontal and vertical planes and then digitized ...

Why model root system architecture?

2000
In this short discussion, I shall attempt to classify some of the various models of root system architecture according to the different purposes they can serve. A major objective, which is recurrent in many modelling approaches, was to provide better representations of the root system as an input for uptake models or crop models.

Root System Architecture, Density, and Measurement

2000
The behaviour and properties of roots are central subjects in this book. A number of biochemical and physiological properties have already been described, for individual roots, in chapters 2, 5, 7, and 8. However, the macroscopic properties of root systems are of very great importance, to an extent that may not be immediately apparent from the point of

Impact of root system architecture on rhizosphere and root microbiome

Rhizosphere, 2018
Abstract The root system influences plant fitness, health, and productivity via its phenotypic traits (phenes) such as root length, biomass, density, volume, and surface area. Although these traits differentially impact the release of 20 to 80% of total photosynthates as root exudates, their role in influencing microbial communities in the ...

Genomic basis determining root system architecture in maize

Theoretical and Applied Genetics
A total of 389 and 344 QTLs were identified by GWAS and QTL mapping explaining accumulatively 32.2-65.0% and 23.7-63.4% of phenotypic variation for 14 shoot-borne root traits using more than 1300 individuals across multiple field trails. Efficient nutrient and water acquisition from soils depends on the root system architecture (RSA).
