Artificial Neural Network Drilling Parameter Optimization System Improves ROP by Predicting/Managing Bit Wear

SPE Intelligent Energy International, 2012
Abstract Tool manufacturers have made significant progress improving downhole drilling technologies, but little effort has focused on optimizing the drilling process. The set-it-and-forget-it approach and inherent inefficiencies of the automatic driller are inadequate for keeping bit parameters matched to lithology and wellbore ...

Increased ROP of Jet Drilling From Improvement of the Bottomhole Flow Field

SPE Drilling Engineering, 1988
Summary With the wide application of jet drilling, continuous research has been carried out to utilize fully the bit hydraulic power at the hole bottom. This paper describes an experimental study of fluid-flow direction in the flow field and discusses its application. The undesirable flow patterns of vortex, backflow, and stagnation were

Adaptive PDC Drill Bit Reduces Stick-Slip and Improves ROP in the Midland Basin

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2018
Abstract In-bit vibration sensors reveal that stick-slip and lateral dysfunction are the primary cause of poor polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit performance in the 12 ¼ -in section of the Midland basin. Premature dulling as a result of vibrations leads to low penetration rates and failure to reach the targeted depth.

ROP Improvement in Hard Formation Drilling Using Large Size PDC Cutters

59th U.S. Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium
ABSTRACT: With the ongoing development of oil and gas drilling equipment, the weight on bit, torque, and hydraulic energy in shallow formations are now sufficient for conventional bits. The study shows that under sufficient energy supply, optimizing PDC bits with larger-diameter cutters can significantly enhance the

Use of MWD for Turbodrill Performance Optimization as a Means To Improve ROP

SPE Drilling Engineering, 1986
Summary Field tests were carried out to monitor the performance of turbodrills driving polycrystalline-diamond-compact (PDC) bits. Separate tests with miid-pulse measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools involved measurement of the rotational speed of the bit and downhole torque.

Drilling with Induced Vibrations Improves ROP and Mitigates Stick/Slip in Vertical and Directional Wells

IADC/SPE Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2014
Abstract For years drillers have been taught to mitigate all vibrations in the drillstring while drilling to maximize Rate of Penetration (ROP), limit bit damage, and extend bit life. While limiting lateral vibrations and stick/slip are proven ways to improve performance and maintain directional control, in recent years it has been ...

PREOPERATIVE ANATOMICAL FEATURES ASSOCIATED WITH IMPROVED SURGICAL OUTCOMES FOR STAGE 5 ROP.

2021
Purpose: To describe preoperative anatomical features of Stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity with results of surgery and patient-related and surgery-related factors affecting postoperative success. Methods: Forty eyes of 33 infants who underwent vitrectomy with lensectomy or lens-sparing vitrectomy for Stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity were enrolled ...

Rolling Depth-Of-Cut Control Improves Tool-Face Control and Overall ROP During Steerable Motor Applications

IADC/SPE International Drilling Conference and Exhibition, 2020
Abstract Rolling depth-of-cut control (RDOCC) on fixed cutter drill bits can improve rate of penetration (ROP) and reduce vibrations during steerable motor applications by reducing torque fluctuations caused by sliding friction. Torque fluctuations are reduced by absorbing weight-on-bit (WOB) variations using a rolling bearing element ...

Advanced Downhole Torsional Oscillation Control Tool Improved Dynamics and Field Average ROP

International Petroleum Technology Conference
Abstract The introduction of a novel torsional oscillation control technology, characterized by its high amplitude, extended attenuation length, and mode-coupled axial excitation, has been instrumental in enhancing drilling dynamics and augmenting the on-bottom drilling rate of penetration (ROP).

IMPROVEMENT OF POINT LEPREAU GENERATING STATION ROP DETECTOR CHARACTERISTICS BY ADJUSTING GAINS IN COMPENSATION AMPLIFIERS

AECL Nuclear Review, 2015
Canadian Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors are protected against reactor overpower by 2 independent shutdown systems: Shut Down System 1 and 2. At Point Lepreau Generating Station, these shutdown systems can be actuated by signals from Platinum-clad Inconel In-Core Flux Detectors measuring the neutron flux.
