Direct and indirect trade‐offs between resistance, growth and reproduction in the Japanese stinging nettle Urtica thunbergiana

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 7, Page 1761-1773, July 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Most studies of trade‐offs between defence, growth and reproduction have examined pairwise correlations between these processes, used ratio‐based measures for defence allocation such as allelochemical concentration and trichome density and estimated resource allocation ...

Patterns and Drivers of Phylogenetic Beta Diversity in the Forests and Savannas of Africa

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 7, July 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Studying beta diversity, or the variation in species composition among communities, can give insights into plant community assembly over space and time. If different biomes show contrasting large‐scale beta‐diversity patterns, this can indicate divergent evolutionary histories or ecological processes that then drive species turnover among ...

Galileo and the Astrological Prophecy of Manuel Rosales

open access: yesCulture and Cosmos, 2014
Scholars and biographers of Galileo have felt at liberty over the centuries to ignore his apparently keen endorsement of a polemical and astrological prophetic text, which he published in Rome in 1626. Luminal Phospholipase D Attacks Bacterial Membranes in Dictyostelium discoideum Phagosomes

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, Volume 124, Issue 1, Page 54-65, July 2025.
This study shows that PldX, a luminal Phospholipase D, is necessary for the efficient destruction of ingested Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria in Dictyostelium discoideum phagosomes. PldX and the AlyL lysozyme together attack the bacterial membrane and permeabilize it. To date, the molecular substrate of PldX remains to be determined. ABSTRACT Phagocytic
