China inside out: Explaining silver flows in the triangular trade, c. 1820s‒70s

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper analyses a new large dataset of silver prices, as well as silver and merchandise trade flows in and out of China in the crucial decades of the mid‐nineteenth century when the Empire was opened to world trade. Silver flows were associated with the interaction between heterogeneous monetary preferences and availability of specific ...

A Cell‐Permeable Photosensitizer for Selective Proximity Labeling and Crosslinking of Aggregated Proteome

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Intracellular proteome aggregation is a ubiquitous disease hallmark with its composition associated with pathogenicity. Herein, this work reports on a cell‐permeable photosensitizer (P8, Rose Bengal derivative) for selective photo induced proximity ...

Plasmon-enhanced sensitization of singlet oxygen on silver island films

open access: yesҚарағанды университетінің хабаршысы. Физика сериясы
The influence of the plasmonic effect of silver island films on the absorption, fluorescence and long-term luminescence of rose bengal in polyvinyl butyral films has been studied. Under the plasmon effect, the optical density of the dye increased by 3.3

Between famine and freedom: Food prices during the Indonesian War of Independence, 1945–9

open access: yesThe Economic History Review, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper investigates how the Indonesian War of Independence (1945‒9) influenced staple food prices, and how fluctuations in those prices, in turn, shaped the trajectory and dynamics of the conflict. We compiled a dataset comprising more than 8600 prices for staple foods covering the entire Indonesian archipelago from 1939‒49, allowing us to

Evaluation of some photosensitizers against the cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in relation to spectral and thermal reflectance

open access: yesScientific Reports
Photosensitizing compounds are eco-friendly promising organic dyes for managing insect pests without facing the risk of resistance. The photodynamic efficacy of four Photosensitizing compounds (rose Bengal, rhodamine B, methylene blue and methyl violet ...

Map and Archival Evidence of the Historical Avulsion of the Brahmaputra River

open access: yesThe Geographical Journal, EarlyView.
Short Abstract One of the world's great rivers, the Brahmaputra, avulsed—changed course—significantly sometime between the dates of 1765 and 1830. These are the dates of surveys by James Rennell (grey) and Richard Wilcox (black), both under the direction of the East India Company; no other surveys between these dates can refine the estimate of the ...

Spatial habitat partitioning enables coexistence of three Gobiidae species in estuarine environments

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines resource partitioning (feeding morphology, diet and habitat partitioning) among three gobiid species, the Knysna sandgoby Psammogobius knysnaensis, the prison goby Caffrogobius gilchristi and the river goby Glossogobius callidus, within an estuarine environment.

Direct evidence of singlet molecular oxygen [O2 (1Δg)] production from UVA excited 6‐thioguanine

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
6‐Thioguanine (6‐TGua) is incorporated into DNA as a purine analogue, inhibiting cell replication. Patients treated with 6‐TGua are more prone to developing skin cancer due to the photoexcitation of 6‐TGua by UVA radiation (as illustrated in the Jablonski diagram). Upon exposure to UVA, the excited 6‐TGua generates 1O2.
