On the Potentials of the Integration of Pressure Gain Combustion with a Hybrid Electric Propulsion System

open access: yesAerospace, 2023
As the issue of pollutant emissions from aviation propulsion escalates, research into alternative powertrains is gaining momentum. Two promising technologies are the Hybrid Electric Propulsion System (HEPS) and Pressure Gain Combustion (PGC).

Low-Order Model for Detonation Velocity Suppression in Rotating Detonation Combustors

open access: yesAIAA SCITECH 2023 Forum, 2023
A Rotating Detonation Combustor (RDC) is a novel pressure gain combustion device, in which a detonation wave processes steadily around an annulus. It has been experimentally observed that detonation waves in the RDC propagate slower than the idealized Chapman- Jouguet (CJ) speed (as low as approximately 60%) and with lower than expected peak pressures.

Iron Energy Carrier: Experimental Characterisation, Combustion Diagnostic and Benchmarking with Other Clean Metal Fuels

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 8, Page 3862-3877, August 2026.
This study investigates how iron particles burn across a wide size range, revealing late‐stage nanoparticle release and a previously unrecognised shift in combustion behaviour near 118 µm. High‐speed imaging, PMT diagnostics and SEM analyses have been conducted.
