Limit Cycle Oscillating Detonation Wave Behavior Analysis Within a Rotating Detonation Engine

Journal of Propulsion and Power
Limit cycle oscillation (LCO) detonation wave behaviors are presented and analyzed for test times exceeding 20 s in a water-cooled rotating detonation engine (RDE). LCO detonation waves exhibit cyclic acceleration and deceleration, resulting in oscillating wave spacing at unique process conditions.

Multiplicity for idealized rotational detonation waves

Physics of Fluids, 2021
Simulations of three-dimensional rotational detonation waves are conducted to understand the mechanisms of wave bifurcation. A compressible reacting Euler solver is developed within the framework of OpenFOAM, and a fixed mass flux boundary condition is developed to avoid complex injector dynamics. Influences of inflow mass flow rates and initiations of

Rotating Detonation Wave in an Annular Gap

Proceedings of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, 2018
The authors consider the three-dimensional Euler equations of an ideal multicomponent reacting mixture that describe combustion of an air-fuel mixture in an annular gap. The system is studied numerically, using high-performance computers. Air is considered as an oxygen-nitrogen mixture, the fuel is gaseous.

Detonation Wave Propagation in Rotational Gas Flows

Journal of Applied Mechanics and Technical Physics, 2004
This paper studies the propagation of detonation and shock waves in vortex gas flows, in which the initial pressure, density, and velocity are functions of the distance from the symmetry axis. Rotational axisymmetric flows having a transverse velocity component in addition to nonuniform longitudinal velocity are considered.

Investigation of Rotating Detonation Waves in an Annular Gap

Proceedings of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, 2020
The authors numerically solve a problem of formation of rotating 3D detonation waves in an annular gap between parallel plates. They consider the case of a propane-air mixture, assuming that the reaction occurs under stoichiometry. They write the system of nonsteady Euler equations for an ideal multicomponent reaction mixture, in a conservative form ...

Change in Continuous Detonation Wave Propagation Mode from Rotating Detonation to Standing Detonation

Chinese Physics Letters, 2010
We perform a three-dimensional numerical simulation based on a one-step chemical reaction model to investigate changes in the mode of H2-Air detonation wave propagation from rotating detonation wave (RDW) mode to standing detonation wave mode. The physical characteristics of an RDW with injection velocity of 500m/s are analyzed to investigate the ...

Transverse wave generation mechanism in rotating detonation

Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, 2013
Abstract Detonation engines are expected to be included in a number of aerospace thrusters in the future. Several types of detonation engines are currently under examination, including the rotating detonation engine (RDE). Although the RDE has been explored experimentally, its rotating detonation propagation mechanism is not well understood.
