Investigation of Flow-Induced Instabilities in a Francis Turbine Operating in Non-Cavitating and Cavitating Part-Load Conditions

open access: yesFluids, 2023
The integration of intermittent renewable energy resources to the grid system requires that hydro turbines regularly operate at part-load conditions.

A Novel Guide Vane System Design to Mitigate Rotating Vortex Rope in High Head Francis Model Turbine

open access: yesInternational Journal of Fluid Machinery and Systems, 2022
Guide vanes are a mechanical system used to direct flow in the desired direction. At lower operating conditions, implementing a guide vane system in the draft tube of a hydro-turbine can decrease the excess swirl in the flow and, thus, reduce pressure fluctuations.

Effects from dayside magnetosphere to distant tail unleashed by a bifurcated, non-reconnecting interplanetary current sheet

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2022
Global magnetospheric effects resulting from the passage at Earth of large-scale structures have been well studied. The effects of common and short-term features, such as discontinuities and current sheets (CSs), have not been studied in the same depth ...

Numerical Simulation of the Flow in a Kaplan Turbine Model during Transient Operation from the Best Efficiency Point to Part Load

open access: yesEnergies, 2020
The aim of this study is to develop a reliable numerical model that provides additional information to experimental measurements and contributes to a better exploitation of hydraulic turbines during transient operation.

Numerical Prediction of Cavitating Vortex Rope in a Draft Tube of a Francis Turbine with Standard and Calibrated Cavitation Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Transient simulations of flow in a Francis turbine were performed with a goal to predict pressure pulsation frequencies and amplitudes caused by rotating vortex rope at part load operating regime.

Research on the Three-dimensional Transient Characteristics of the Hydraulic System during Load Rejection with Combined Regulation of Ball Valve and Guide Vanes in the Entire Hydraulic Passage of the Pumped Storage Power Stations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
The complex transient flow field in the entire hydraulic system of a large pump turbine under load rejection conditions, involving the simultaneous closing of the ball valve and guide vanes, is comprehensively investigated using the Re-Normalization ...

Pressure Fluctuations in the S-Shaped Region of a Reversible Pump-Turbine

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
Numerical simulations were performed to investigate pressure fluctuations in the S-shaped region of a pump-turbine model. Analyses focused on pressure fluctuations in the draft tube and in the gap between the guide vanes and runner.

Connection between inlet velocity field and diffuser flow instability [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Computational Mechanics, 2009
Simulations of the flow in a straight diffuser were carried out for different inlet velocity profiles equivalent to the real turbine operating points. Frequencies and magnitudes of pressure pulsations of the rotating vortex rope were recorded.

Flow Field Analysis of Francis Turbine Draft Tube using POD at Design and Part Load Operating Conditions [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
The hydraulic turbines, especially Francis turbines, frequently run at part load (PL) conditions to meet the dynamic energy needs. The flow field at the runner exit changes significantly with a change in the operating point.
