Connection between inlet velocity field and diffuser flow instability [PDF]
Simulations of the flow in a straight diffuser were carried out for different inlet velocity profiles equivalent to the real turbine operating points. Frequencies and magnitudes of pressure pulsations of the rotating vortex rope were recorded.

Mitigation of Rotating Vortex Rope in a Hydro Turbine using a Guide Vane System
Using renewable energy, such as water or wind, to produce electricity has been proven highly effective in Sweden. The ability of these renewable resources to make clean output energy counters the adversities caused by non-renewable resources. Amongst these, hydro turbines are one of the most preferred methods for generating electricity from water ...

Global magnetospheric effects resulting from the passage at Earth of large-scale structures have been well studied. The effects of common and short-term features, such as discontinuities and current sheets (CSs), have not been studied in the same depth ...

Assessment of fiber bragg grating sensors for monitoring induced strains on the draft tube cone of hydraulic turbines [PDF]
In hydraulic turbines, several flow instabilities can take place inside the draft tube cone during off-design and transient operating conditions such as the rotating vortex rope which can severely damage the structure if sustained in time.

Vortex rope mitigation with azimuthal perturbations: A numerical study
A novel method to mitigate the rotating vortex rope is investigated numerically on a propeller turbine using ANSYS CFX. Pulsating momentum is injected in a horizontal plane in the diffuser cone from four evenly spaced jets.

Research on the Three-dimensional Transient Characteristics of the Hydraulic System during Load Rejection with Combined Regulation of Ball Valve and Guide Vanes in the Entire Hydraulic Passage of the Pumped Storage Power Stations [PDF]
The complex transient flow field in the entire hydraulic system of a large pump turbine under load rejection conditions, involving the simultaneous closing of the ball valve and guide vanes, is comprehensively investigated using the Re-Normalization ...

Pressure Fluctuations in the S-Shaped Region of a Reversible Pump-Turbine
Numerical simulations were performed to investigate pressure fluctuations in the S-shaped region of a pump-turbine model. Analyses focused on pressure fluctuations in the draft tube and in the gap between the guide vanes and runner.

Flow Field Analysis of Francis Turbine Draft Tube using POD at Design and Part Load Operating Conditions [PDF]
The hydraulic turbines, especially Francis turbines, frequently run at part load (PL) conditions to meet the dynamic energy needs. The flow field at the runner exit changes significantly with a change in the operating point.

Experimental pub crawl from Rayleigh–Bénard to magnetostrophic convection [PDF]
The interplay between convective, rotational and magnetic forces defines the dynamics within the electrically conducting regions of planets and stars. Yet their triadic effects are separated from one another in most studies, arguably due to the richness ...
