Animal and plant responses for steers grazing switchgrass and big bluestem pastures [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Native warm-season grasses can provide large amounts of high-quality forage during the midsummer months. Maximum potential benefits depend on management of the entire cool-and warm-season grazing system.

A Biologically‐Architected Wear and Damage‐Resistant Nanoparticle Coating From the Radular Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.

Mob grazing: A nature-based solution for British farms producing pasture-fed livestock

open access: yesNature-Based Solutions, 2023
Mob grazing is a nature-based solution to boost sustainable livestock productivity by optimising pasture management. It is already used widely in North America, and is now also receiving increased attention in the United Kingdom.

Operational strategies for optimizing grazing when using automatic milking systems in organic dairy production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Successful grazing when using AMS is possible without having to devote a great deal of time to organize and fetch cows every day. However, a careful strategy and good infrastructure, and observation of cow behaviour and pasture are necessary, and the ...

Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging of Ferroelastic Domains

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A simple scanning electron microscopy technique, electron channeling contrast imaging, unveils nanoscale ferroelastic domains and their coupling to functional properties in oxide heterostructures. The work demonstrates high‐resolution mapping of both surface and buried domains, broadening the experimental toolbox for ferroic and quantum oxide systems ...

C16 Phase High Entropy Borides With High Magnetic Anisotropy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Rare‐earth‐free C16‐phase high entropy boride thin films exhibit enhanced magnetic anisotropy with coercivities surpassing their binary and ternary counterparts. Combinatorial synthesis of (Fe‐Co‐Ni‐Mn)2B films combined with density functional theory enables mapping of the magnetic properties across the composition space, revealing high entropy ...

Incorporating native plant communities on farms for forage and wildlife [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Rotational grazing systems have potential to reduce soil loss and fossil fuel use, and may increase biodiversity by providing a wildlife habitat. Establishing native, warm-season plant communities based on the region\u27s native tallgrass prairie ...

From Thin Films to Nanodots: Bottom‐Up Integration of Fe3O4 on Nb:STO for Functional Oxide Nanostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Scalable bottom‐up fabrication of Fe3O4 nanodots on Nb:SrTiO3 using anodic alumina templates enables long‐range ordered arrays with diameters down to 30 nm. STEM highlights the epitaxial growth of Fe3O4 films on Nb:SrTiO3. Complementary polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) and X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on continuous films ...

Evaluation of fall‐seeded cover crops for grassland nesting waterfowl in eastern South Dakota

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView., 2023
Cover crops are experiencing a revival among Midwestern farmers, and we assessed their attractiveness and safety for nesting ducks in South Dakota. Nest success was markedly lower in cover crops than in perennial cover during both years of our study, including 2019 which was a best‐case scenario for cover crops, with extremely wet conditions delaying ...

Impact of Grazing Methods on Forage and Cattle Production

open access: yesEDIS, 2007
SS-AGR-133, a 5-page fact sheet by Joao Vendramini and Lynn Sollenberger, describes the advantages and disadvantages of rotational grazing vs. continuous grazing. Includes figures and references. Published by the UF Department of Agronomy, January 2007.
