Multi-directional dynamic model for traumatic brain injury detection [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex injury that is hard to predict and diagnose, with many studies focused on associating head kinematics to brain injury risk. Recently, there has been a push towards using computationally expensive finite element (FE) models of the brain to create tissue deformation metrics of brain injury. Here, we developed a 3

Prevalence of function‐limiting late effects in survivors of head and neck cancer

open access: yesPM&R, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) are commonly affected by multiple complex and interrelated long‐term and late effects that can adversely affect their function and quality of life. Objective To define the prevalence of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, visceral, oncologic, and other late effects affecting function and quality ...

cuFFS: A GPU-accelerated code for Fast Faraday Rotation Measure Synthesis [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Rotation measure (RM) synthesis is a widely used polarization processing algorithm for reconstructing polarized structures along the line of sight. Performing RM synthesis on large datasets produced by telescopes like LOFAR can be computationally intensive as the computational cost is proportional to the product of the number of input frequency ...

Rhomboid flap reconstruction of a chronic wound in a dog; an alternative subdermal plexus flap configuration

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract A 7‐year‐old, male, neutered cocker spaniel was referred for management of a chronic wound over the caudo‐lateral thigh. Dehiscence had occurred shortly after an excisional biopsy of a cutaneous mast‐cell tumour due to excessive tension. A wound bed of chronic granulation tissue, 12 × 6 cm, was present with adherent margins.

Investigating the cellular origin of rotator cuff muscle fatty infiltration and fibrosis after injury.

open access: yesMuscles Ligaments and Tendons Journal, 2016
BACKGROUND rotator cuff muscle atrophy, fibrosis and fatty infiltration are common complications after large and massive rotator cuff tears. Currently, there are no effective treatments for these muscle pathologies after injury. Furthermore, the cellular

New Mechanics of Generic Musculo-Skeletal Injury [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2008
Prediction and prevention of musculo-skeletal injuries is an important aspect of preventive health science. Using as an example a human knee joint, this paper proposes a new coupled-loading-rate hypothesis, which states that a generic cause of any musculo-skeletal injury is a Euclidean jolt, or SE(3)-jolt, an impulsive loading that hits a joint in ...
