Effect of enzymes on rotavirus infectivity

The infectivity of a bovine rotavirus was enhanced 140-, 8-, and 3-fold, respectively, by trypsin, protease, and lactase. Ficin, carboxypeptidases A and B, lysozyme, and beta-galactosidase had little effect on the infectivity. Chymotrypsin caused a threefold decrease in the infectivity. Trypsin acts directly on the rotavirus and not on the host cell.

Abstract Inoculation of lamb rotavirus to gnotobiotic lambs produced a disease characterized by diarrhoea and anorexia. Rotavirus was excreted in the faeces of the lambs for several days. One-day-old lambs were more susceptible than 12-day-old lambs.

The immunoprophylaxis of of rotavirus infections in lambs

The effect of colostrum or serum feeding on subsequent rotavirus infections was investigated in neonatal gnotobiotic lambs. Immunity after feeding colostrum did not depend on absorption of passively acquired antibody into the circulation. Protection against clinical disease depended on the volume of colostrum ingested.
