Experimental assessment of large mammal population estimates from airborne thermal videography

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Wildlife resource management requires reliable, fast, and affordable methods of surveying wildlife populations to develop and adaptively adjust policies. Thermal video from drones can yield high rates of detection over large areas with relative speed and safety.

Multipole expansion approach for rotor noise prediction

open access: yesJournal of Sound and Vibration
This paper presents a frequency-domain model of rotor tonal noise, based on a multipole expansion of the radiated field. The expressions for loading and thickness noise are derived in hovering condition, employing the results of compressible thin airfoil theory.

Helicopter far-field acoustic levels as a function of reduced main-rotor advancing blade-tip Mach number [PDF]

open access: yes
During the design of a helicopter, the weight, engine, rotor speed, and rotor geometry are given significant attention when considering the specific operations for which the helicopter will be used. However, the noise radiated from the helicopter and its

Arc Resistance Enhancement of Converter Transformer Tank Through Structural Improvements: Simulation and Experimental Validation

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Currently, limited research exists on the structural response and protection methods of the converter transformer tank for ± 800 kV ultra‐high voltage direct current transmission project to high energy arc faults. This research investigates the dynamic response and the vulnerable areas of the ultra‐high voltage converter transformer under the ...

Structureborne noise control in advanced turboprop aircraft [PDF]

open access: yes
Structureborne noise is discussed as a contributor to propeller aircraft interior noise levels that are nonresponsive to the application of a generous amount of cabin sidewall acoustic treatment.

Integrating simultaneous interfacial shear rheology with neutron reflectometry for structural and dynamic analysis of fluid interfacial systems

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
We present a new setup at the FIGARO horizontal neutron reflectometer enabling simultaneous measurement of the structural and mechanical properties of liquid interfaces, combining neutron reflectometry with interfacial shear rheology. The study of the structure and mechanical properties of complex fluid interfaces has attracted growing interest in ...

Rotor-vortex interaction noise [PDF]

open access: yes
A theoretical and experimental study was conducted to develop a validated first principles analysis for predicting noise generated by helicopter main-rotor shed vortices interacting with the tail rotor.

Influence of vane sweep on rotor-stator interaction noise [PDF]

open access: yes
The influence of vane sweep in rotor-stator interaction noise is investigated. In an analytical approach, the interaction of a convected gust representing the rotor viscous wake, with a cascade of cascade of finite span swept airfoils, representing the ...

In situ aerial bioacoustic monitoring from extremely noisy drone recordings

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Aerial bioacoustic monitoring has the potential to transform biodiversity surveys by enabling rapid acoustic sampling across large and inaccessible habitats. However, its application from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has remained limited because strong rotor self‐noise overwhelms target sounds such as bird vocalisations, compromising the ...
