Rounding Numbers

The Arithmetic Teacher, 1959
In the normal sequence of arithmetic we study whole numbers, common fractions and decimal fractions in this order. After pupils have gained some facility with decimals, we direct them to round their answers to the nearest thousandth or other decimal. This rounding is difficult for two reasons.

The Distribution of Round Numbers

Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, 1987
For positive x and positive integer y, let \(\pi\) (x,y) denote the number of natural numbers less than x which have exactly y distinct prime divisors. The asymptotic formula due to Sathe and Selberg gives \[ \pi (x,y)\cong (x(\log \log x)^{y-1}/(y-1)!\quad \log x)\quad F((y-1)/\log \log x), \] where \(F(z)=(1/\Gamma (z+1))\prod_{p prime}(1+z/(p-1))(1-

The Preference for Round Number Prices

2005
This study determines if a preference for round prices exists in the wheat market and how wheat sales react to price movements around whole dollar amounts. The results show round prices are slightly more prevalent than non-round prices and that transactions increase when price moves above a whole dollar amount.

Producers’ preferences for round number prices

Agricultural Finance Review, 2007
The purpose of this study was to determine if a preference for round prices exists in the wheat market and how wheat sales react to price movements around whole‐dollar amounts. The results show round prices are slightly more prevalent than non round prices, and transactions increase when price moves above a whole‐dollar amount.

Round Numbers as Goals

Psychological Science, 2010
Where do people’s reference points come from? We conjectured that round numbers in performance scales act as reference points and that individuals exert effort to perform just above rather than just below such numbers. In Study 1, we found that professional baseball players modify their behavior as the season is about to end, seeking to finish with a ...

Teaching energy balance using round numbers

Physics Education, 2003
The idea of energy balance used to explain the greenhouse effect and global warming is often confusing for students, primarily because the standard quantitative analysis uses many constants and units. A 'round unit' method is presented, which maintains the quantitative aspects of the standard analysis, but is much more intuitive for students.

Round-off errors andp-adic numbers

Nonlinearity, 1999
Summary: We explore some connections between round-off errors in linear planar rotations and algebraic number theory. We discretize a map on a lattice in such a way as to retain invertibility, restricting the system parameter (the trace) to rational values with power-prime denominator \(p^n\).

The Use of Round Numbers

Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering, 1983
Round numbers are widely used in engineering. Through a process of tacit co‐ordination between the writer and the reader, round numbers help focus attention simply by being round, facilitate agreement, speed review processes, and reduce argument.

Generalized Fibonacci Numbers are Rounded Powers

1990
We show that the k th degree generalized Fibonacci number of order n ≥ 0,F n (k) can be computed by $$\begin{array}{l} F_n^{\left( k \right)} = ROUND\left\{ {\alpha _0^{\left( k \right)}{{\left( {\Phi _0^{\left( k \right)}} \right)}^n}} \right\}\\ = \left\lfloor {\frac{{\Phi _0^{\left( k \right)} - 1}}{{(k + 1)\Phi _0^{\left( k \right)} - 2k ...
