Overview and Classification of IP Routing Protocols — IP Routing
2004This chapter covers the basis of routing technologies and protocols for IP networks. After a review on routing design issues, a classification of routing protocols is presented, with details and comparative assessments. A case study is presented that addresses the routing technologies and design criteria for a global IP network for a large-size company.

Routing Protocols for GeoNet: A Survey
IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2012The last decade has witnessed the rapid development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which aim to improve transportation activities in terms of safety and efficiency. Intervehicle communication (IVC) is an important component of the ITS architecture that enables vehicles to communicate with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure.

Since the IPv6 over Low-Power Wireless Area Networks (6LoWPAN) standard does not define routing protocols, several approaches have been made to reuse and adapt existing MANET protocols. Extensive current research and development is conducted at the ROLL working group.

Knowledge of routing and routing protocols is the basis to understand networking and its technologies. This chapter starts by introducing basic concepts, such as a route’s composition, static and dynamic routes, and routing tables. It then describes RIP, the simplest routing protocol. This chapter also introduces the concepts of OSPF.

On the Internet routing protocol Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol: is it optimal?
International Transactions in Operational Research, 2006Cisco's proprietary routing protocol, EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol) is one of the two most widely employed routing protocols in the Internet. The underlying algorithm is reputed to be optimal with respect to the EIGRP metric. We construct a counterexample to illustrate that it is not optimal.

Routing Protocols Configuration
2017This chapter starts by explaining the configuration of static and default routing. This chapter also shows how to combine the use of default routes with changes to the administrative distance. Then, a simplified configuration of multicast routing is explained.

Wireless mesh networks are multi-hop networks. Therefore, a mechanism for finding a path between source and destination is needed. Static routing means that the path is set up manually, while dynamic routing requires a routing protocol which sets up routing tables. A router forwards packets to a next hop neighbor, which is chosen upon a routing metric.

Route Interchange Protocol (RIP) is one of the simplest routing protocols and one of the first to be developed. For smaller networks it is the protocol of choice, even though RIP has many drawbacks. RIP is simple to implement, requires very little expertise, and is very common on the Internet.
