Quaternary Climatic Changes and Biogeographic Barriers Drove Codiversification in the Obligate Mutualism Between Camponotus laevigatus and Its Endosymbiont Blochmanniella

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
In this study, we examined the codiversification and phylogeography of Camponotus laevigatus and its obligate endosymbiont Blochmanniella using a population genomic approach. Using whole‐genome sequencing, we identified three phylogeographic clusters with congruent host‐endosymbiont phylogenies, significant isolation‐by‐distance, and Pleistocene ...

Do field margins matter more than floral resources? Arthropod activity and limited spillover of natural enemies from perennial flower strips into adjacent crops

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 7, July 2026.
Both flower and grass strips supported significantly higher arthropod activity than adjacent crop fields, underlining the general ecological value of field margins regardless of floral composition. The observed group‐specific responses emphasize the need for taxa‐specific analyses within heterogeneous functional groups, rather than relying solely on ...

Run to the nest: A parody on the Iron Maiden song by Corotoca spp. (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae)

open access: yesPapéis Avulsos de Zoologia, 2019
Rove beetles belonging to the genus Corotoca (Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae) are termitophiles exclusively found in nests of Constrictotermes (Isoptera: Termitidae). We observed the reproductive behavior of Corotoca melantho and C.

The Function of the Partially‐Opened Spathe of Pinellia pedatisecta (Araceae) as a Pitfall Pollinator Trap

open access: yesPlant Species Biology, Volume 41, Issue 4, July 2026.
Pinellia pedatisecta has a simplified inflorescence structure, compared to its congeners with highly specialized trap pollination systems. However, our study suggests that P. pedatisecta also captures and releases pollinating insects by the spathe movement during flowering season.

Challenges and Advances Driving Studies on Aquatic Insects of the Order Coleoptera

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) are known for their high taxonomic and ecological diversity and their sensitivity to environmental changes, making them key bioindicators in ecological assessments. However, numerous knowledge gaps persist globally.

First record of Lathrobium dilutum Erichson, 1839 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) from the Urals

open access: yesАмурский зоологический журнал
The rare rove beetle Lathrobium dilutum Erichson, 1839 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) is recorded from the Urals for the first time. The study is based on the material collected in Perm Krai using pitfall traps.

Hypogean Quedius of Taiwan and their biogeographic significance (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2020
As a result of the integrative (morphology and DNA barcodes) revision of the Taiwanese species of the rove beetle genus Quedius belonging to the abnormalis group, in the subgenus Microsaurus, three valid hypogean species are reported for the fauna of ...

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1255-1310, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

Survey of rove beetles (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with new records and description of a new species. Part 2

open access: yesZooKeys, 2009
The second survey in 2008 of rove beetle species from Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada is presented. Fifty-one species were found from the following subfamilies: Aleocharinae (18), Micropeplinae (1), Omaliinae (11), Osoriinae (1 ...
