Archaeal rRNA operons

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 1991
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) operons of the archaea reflect both the unity and the diversity of this third primary taxon. They have proven to be a rich source of both molecular biological and phylogenetic information.

Glucocorticoid regulation of rRNA synthesis

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1991
Glucocorticoids inhibit transcription of the genes encoding rRNA (rDNA) in P1798 lymphoma cells. This is due to a decrease in the amount or activity of a transcription factor, called TFIC. TFIC has been purified to apparent homogeneity and the properties of this protein have been investigated in detail. TFIC is tightly associated with RNA polymerase I.

Upstream binding factor-dependent and pre-rRNA transcription-independent association of pre-rRNA processing factors with rRNA gene

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2014
The nucleolus is the ribosome biogenesis center. The nucleolar structure is disrupted upon entry into mitosis and is formed in early G1 phase. To understand the molecular mechanisms of nucleolar assembly and disassembly, we have studied the mechanism of association between factors involved in pre-ribosome RNA (rRNA) processing and rRNA gene chromatin ...

rRNA synthesis in the nucleolus

Trends in Genetics, 1990
The past year has seen advances in our understanding of three broad areas that concern ribosomal RNA production. It is becoming apparent that for a large number of eukaryotes, sequence elements that regulate ribosomal RNA transcription are arranged in a similar pattern.

Structure of rRNA in the ribosome

Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1992
Ribosomes are complex subcellular organelles playing a central role in protein biosynthesis. They are composed of more than fifty different proteins and three or four ribonucleic acids (rRNA) unevenly distributed (with no symmetry) between the large and small ribosomal subunit.

5S rRNA and ribosome

Biochemistry (Moscow), 2011
5S rRNA is an integral component of the ribosome of all living organisms. It is known that the ribosome without 5S rRNA is functionally inactive. However, the question about the specific role of this RNA in functioning of the translation apparatus is still open.

An rRNA variant to deal with stress

Nature Microbiology, 2019
Bacteria have previously been assumed to cope with environmental stress by tuning their total number of active ribosomes. Instead, a study in this issue of Nature Microbiology shows that from a heterogeneous pool of ribosomes, Vibrio vulnificus uses ribosomes with a particular ribosomal RNA variant to translate upregulated stress response mRNAs.

rRNA modifications and ribosome function

Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 2002
The development of three-dimensional maps of the modified nucleotides in the ribosomes of Escherichia coli and yeast has revealed that most (approximately 95% in E. coli and 60% in yeast) occur in functionally important regions. These include the peptidyl transferase centre, the A, P and E sites of tRNA- and mRNA binding, the polypeptide exit tunnel ...

rRNA Methylation and Antibiotic Resistance

Biochemistry (Moscow), 2020
Methylation of nucleotides in rRNA is one of the basic mechanisms of bacterial resistance to protein synthesis inhibitors. The genes for corresponding methyltransferases have been found in producer strains and clinical isolates of pathogenic bacteria. In some cases, rRNA methylation by housekeeping enzymes is, on the contrary, required for the action ...

Interactions of aminoglycoside antibiotics with rRNA

Biochemical Society Transactions, 2016
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are protein synthesis inhibitors applied to treat infections caused mainly by aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. Due to their adverse side effects they are last resort antibiotics typically used to combat pathogens resistant to other drugs. Aminoglycosides target ribosomes.
