Abstract: RILEM Technical Committee 279 WMR is dedicated to the Valorization of Waste and Secondary Materials for Roads. Its Task Group 2 investigated Crumb Rubber (CR) as an additive to enhance the performance of bitumen. CR recycled from end-of-life tires (ELTs) was chosen for this investigation because crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) has been ...

Effect of activated crumb rubber on the properties of crumb rubber‐modified bitumen
Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 2013AbstractBitumen modification was made with the activated crumb rubber concentrate and its efficacy was examined in terms of its consistency and rheological properties. It was found that softening point of the activated crumb rubber‐modified bitumen increased while its penetration and elastic recovery decreased compared with the nonactivated crumb ...

Effect of crumb rubber characteristics on crumb rubber modified (CRM) binder viscosity
Construction and Building Materials, 2009Abstract Asphalt binder viscosity is of great importance during the production process of hot mix asphalt mixture as typically asphalt plants will store binders between 149 °C and 177 °C. SHRP guidelines state that asphalt binder viscosity must not exceed 3 Pa s.

Effects of water activation of crumb rubber on the properties of crumb rubber-modified binders
International Journal of Pavement Engineering, 2009Hot water activation of crumb rubber has been suggested as a method of improving compatibility between crumb rubber and asphalt binder. This procedure removes light oil fractions present in the crumb rubber particles, thus decreasing segregation occurring between rubber particles and binder.

Effects of Crumb Rubber Variability on Failure Temperature of Crumb Rubber Modified Binders
Road Materials and Pavement Design, 2008This paper examines the effects of different crumb rubber sources on Crumb Rubber Modified (CRM) binder failure temperatures as defined by the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) testing procedures. Focus is on identifying crumb rubber properties that affect the rutting susceptibility of the CRM binders.

This investigation reports the influence of the type of binder and crumb rubber gradation and dosage rate on the creep and recovery properties of crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB). Two types of binders, air blown and blended, were used with two gradations of crumb rubber, fine and coarse, at three dosage rates, 8, 10, and 12%.
