Rubisco catalytic properties of wild and domesticated relatives provide scope for improving wheat photosynthesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Rubisco is a major target for improving crop photosynthesis and yield, yet natural diversity in catalytic properties of this enzyme is poorly understood.

Soil drying induces widespread productivity loss but unequal climate vulnerability among ecotypes of a foundational Arctic sedge

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract As temperatures increase in the Arctic, hydrological change may lead to local soil drying through altered snowpack, evapotranspiration and drainage due to permafrost thaw.

Rubisco small subunits of C4 plants, Napier grass and guinea grass confer C4-like catalytic properties on Rubisco in rice

open access: yesPlant Production Science, 2019
Overexpression of Rubisco small subunit (RbcS) of C4 plant, sorghum (sorghum bicolor) was shown to enhance the catalytic turnover rate (kcat) of Rubisco in rice (Oryza sativa).

Influence of flanking genes on Gammaproteobacterial form I and II RubisCO functioning

open access: yes, 2021
Since the majority of all microorganisms are currently not culturable, we used a metagenomic approach to identify genes and enzymes associated with RubisCO expression.

Russian wheat aphid: a model for genomic plasticity and a challenge to breeders

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Invasive foundress finds suitable habitat and reproduces through pathogenesis. Wingless females produce life offspring quickly, which leads to high population densities. High population densities result in competition, which may induce epigenetic changes and wing development for dispersal.

Simultaneous modification of Thermotoga maritima encapsulin subunits to produce multivalent nanoparticle vaccines for non‐typhoidal Salmonella enterica

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
This study investigates the modularity of encapsulin—a protein nanoparticle—by simultaneously inserting up to four distinct Salmonella epitopes within the encapsulin subunit. The encapsulin variants were transiently expressed in plants where they assembled into nanoparticles; however, their accumulation and stability varied depending on the ...

SlGRF1 mediates gibberellin signaling to control cut‐budding in tomato

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
Upon wounding, cytokinin increases to initiate callus formation. Gibberellin enhances this, but later blocks bud formation by suppressing SlGRF1. Wounding‐induced protein SlGRF1 triggers buds via NAM1, EPF4, and ER2. Hormonal shifts control cut‐budding phases.

Prospects for increasing photosynthesis by overcoming the limitations of Rubisco

open access: yes, 2007
The low activity and the competing reactions catalysed by Rubisco are major limitations to photosynthetic carbon assimilation in C3 plants; the present paper considers how these limitations can be overcome.

The IKU2/RLK7–MAPK–MINI3 signaling module controls endosperm cellularization timing to determine seed size in Arabidopsis

open access: yesJournal of Integrative Plant Biology, EarlyView.
The phosphorylation status of the WRKY transcription factor WRKY10/MINI3, controls the timing of endosperm cellularization in Arabiopsis, thus regulating final seed size, offering a molecular understanding that could inform future agricultural breeding strategies. ABSTRACT Seed size is a critical factor in determining crop yield.
