Rudimentary Horn Ectopic Pregnancy

Ultrasound is widely used for diagnosis of ectopic pregnancies, and is the accepted imaging modality to rule out ectopic pregnancies. Rudimentary horn pregnancy can be difficult to differentiate from an abdominal pregnancy. The visualization of an intact placenta with welldefined borders seems to be a key in the differential diagnosis.

Rudimentary horn pregnancies are rare, and are associated with a high rate of maternal morbidity and mortality. The standard treatment is laparotomy, as patients usually experience massive abdominal hemorrhage or pregnancies too large to attempt laparoscopic removal. Pregnancy in a rudimentary uterine horn is associated with a high risk of acute uterine rupture and hence increased maternal morbidity. Early diagnosis is essential for successful management but remains a clinical challenge. If a rudimentary uterine horn is detected before pregnancy, surgical removal should be performed by laparoscopy.
