Rumen Microbiome, Probiotics, and Fermentation Additives

Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 2017
Fermentation of a variety of feedstuffs by the ruminal microbiome is the distinctive feature of the ruminant digestive tract. The host derives energy and nutrients from microbiome activity; these organisms are essential to survival. Advances in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics have redefined the rumen microbial community.

Manipulation of fermentation in the rumen

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 1976
AbstractArtificial saliva (4 litres/day) was infused into the rumen of sheep fed a semi‐purified diet at hourly intervals. Dilution rate and the efficiency of synthesis of microbial protein in vivo were increased. The pattern of rumen fermentation was altered; the molar proportion of propionic acid decreased (32–20%) and acetic acid increased (58–66 ...

Effects of rumen-degradable protein balance on rumen fermentation in continuous culture fermenters

Frontiers of Agriculture in China, 2011
Twelve dual-flow continuous culture fermenters (culture 8 d with 5 d for adjustment and 3 d for sample collection) were used to evaluate the effects of rumen-degradable protein balance (RDPB) on rumen fermentation. The different RDPB levels in six diets were as follows: − 16.84, − 8.87, − 0.87, + 7.13, + 15.13, and + 23.12 g RDPB /kg DM.

Rumen fermentation of fresh herbage

The Journal of Agricultural Science, 1966
1. On twelve occasions covering a complete seasonal cycle rumen mierobial end-product concentrations were measured in a group of sheep allowed to graze a pasture for 1 hr. Considerable differences were obtained in the rises in total volatile fatty acid and ammonia after feeding, in average rumen protein nitrogen and in free mierobial count.2.

Fermentation in the Rumen of the Sheep

Nature, 1950
ABSTRACT A previous communication in this series of papers (Gray, Pilgrim & Weller, 1951) gave an account of the fermentation of wheaten hay and lucerne hay by organisms from the rumen of the sheep, in which the overall production of each of the main volatile fatty acids was determined.

The fermentative characteristics of anaerobic rumen fungi

Biosystems, 1988
Substrate utilization and fermentation characteristics of rumen fungi of the genus Neocallimastix are described. Preliminary observations on the removal of monosaccharides from plant cell walls and the effect of fermentation products on growth of Neocallimastix sp. (isolate R1) are presented.

Plant extracts to manipulate rumen fermentation

Animal Feed Science and Technology, 2008
The removal of antibiotic growth-promoters has led to an increased interest in alternative means of manipulating rumen fermentation. In this review we consider one of the possible alternatives: natural plant products including essential oils, saponins and related compounds. Essential oils have been used by man for many years.
