The essay proposes a typology of rural economies for developed countries on the basis of the current literature reviewed. The purpose is to offer a knowledge background to implement economic policies in rural areas of industrialized countries. The main hypothesis states that an increasingly differentiated regionalization of rural space is taking place.

Abstract In China, agriculture has always been regarded as an important part of the national economy. For the past 30 years agricultural policy has been drafted in accordance with the principle that ‘agriculture is the basis of the national economy and “grain” is the basis of that basis’.
